We've planned a trip to Australia next year and I'm figuring out roaming costs, I thought my EE plan was high at £25 per 7 days to use like at home over there but my mother-in-law is on Tesco mobile..
There's no option to buy a roam pack or anything on Tesco mobile and it's £5 per MB! £5000 per GB!! what the actual!?

She's tied into a contract with them so cannot change yet, are there any options other than getting a temporary Aus sim-card?

Thanks!

Surely that can't be right? Thats insane.

That's what it says on Tesco's website:

Esims are game changers if your contract doesn't support decent roaming and data, a lot don't tbh.

There's tons of choices with esim.

Lots of suggestions for esim, but we just buy a regular sim for the country we're going to.... Usually a £10 pre-pay sim will do a holiday!

Some countries do offer it cheaper when physical, but there has been times where family, friends and I accidentally lost my UK SIM (luckily I was with giffgaff back then with spare blank SIMs so made it easy to get back up and running as soon as I got home). Not to mention being able to activate the eSIM as soon as the plane lands allows me to message family/friends who could be meeting me at the airport, so they don't have to wait around as long.

Why are you against just getting a local sim? It works out much cheaper if using a lot of data.

See the post above.

Also she is currently using a physical sim so that would mean she can’t run her normal number - nightmare for authentication/imessage/whatsapp etc so that rules that out right away.

It’s just a hassle free. Get the sim all set up before you go. Land. Turn on the line. Use the phone as normal. Happy days.

Our suggestion is because you can buy a physical sim in the UK and swap it during flight. There's no Whatsapp issue with using a different sim, and have never had an issue with any other authentication type thing but YMMV.... I wouldn't want to be receiving any codes abroad on my number if I didn't have roaming (for cost reasons).

£25 for 7 days of like home roaming in Australia is an absolute bargain!

Just get an esim and be done with it otherwise. I used Saily for data only and it was cost effective, dont need SMS/Call these days with the abundance of internet enabled calling.

You don’t pay to receive texts

Has she called TM to validate this as being correct and it isn't someone has just typo'd MB instead of GB when they made the website? Seems insane....
