I'm thinking of replacing my old long reach petrol hedge trimmer as its been giving me quite a few issues this year.

I'm thinking of replacing with a battery version so I don't have to worry about ethanol in the petrol (yes I could use Aspen but it costs £5/6 per litre) less noise and no fumes.

It would also be nice to have a lighter weight machine than my current machine which is 6.7kg. Most of the battery machines seem to be only a little lighter once you add in the weight of the battery.

Has any one had experience of any of the following brands?

EGO
STIHL
Husqvarna
Echo

I have had a quick look at the EGO HTX5300-PA in my local garden dealer showroom and it seemed to be well thought out and I liked that it had the variable speed options.

As I'm replacing a petrol machine I need something with similar performance to it, that Ryobi has a very low blade speed of 1350 rpm and won't be suitable.

Thanks anyway.

Greenworks any good to you? I bought in to their 40V system, have a lawnmower, hedge trimmer, long reach hedge trimmer and brush cutter, and I'm pleased with them all. The brush cutter is particularly excellent.

Here's the long reach trimmer:

I've been considering a makita dux60 with the hedge trimmer. If you have tools already with batteries though..

I was going to get Ego but ended up going with a proven and longstanding brand with Stihl.

Got an AP battery series Kombi unit (KMA135R) with hedge trimmer and strimmer attachments and a seperate mower. Its bulletproof and just works, the AP300S batteries last for ages too. I've got 2 of them but havent fully discharged one in a session yet.

Stihl is more spendy but worth it IMO, especially if you have a nearby dealer for servicing/warranty etc.

I have this:

48v and 3000spm, absolutely cracking. The pruner attachment is fantastic and I've got through some pretty thick stuff with it, like best part of a foot thick leylandii and it made lighter work of it than expected

lol - yes that's the combi I'd want hedge trimmer and high reach pruner -

was just about to say

does that work out cheaper than individual stihl tools - unfortunately no pole cut option.

my problem is hedge trimmers that rip the box hedge I have, once a year they really need 3-4" taken off the top where it is pretty dense, and you have to contend with debris falling into hedge and being reshredded as it falls,
such that using shears can be cleaner.
(Spending on chemicals to kill the box hedge caterpillar is getting annoying too.)

I had considered a multi tool but think with the amount of hedge I cut a dedicated hedge trimmer is the better option.

I was looking for similar earlier in the year, but have decided to hold off for now (too late in the year to really need it now, and I managed for now).

I was close to purchasing an Einhell kit, Spec wise, they seem to be decent (they do some different spec tools, but if you pick the right one, they look good), but couldn't really find much else about them. I was quite tempted due to the number of other tools they have in the range though too, even though I've already got a large Dewalt collection, they seem to do more & cheaper than Dewalt for extras I might want. Has anyone looked at Einhell, or have any of their kit that can comment on what they're like?

Stihl do sell extension poles for extra reach.

yes I had considered hiring their petrol one with extra reach from local company for weekend with idea to do mine&relations trees ..
since its a big expense for something use rarely - need a local co-operative.

(not sure if they hire battery ones, suspect the power differential is large)

I have a Makita dux60 with 2 extensions and a pole saw attachment (among others) and would recommend. Also a stihl chainsaw and it’s very good. I have taken down a few trees with the Makita

OK hadn't realised dux60 had a pole saw option ... but I don't really understand how it works I thought dux60 base unit had the motor, but how can it efficiently/enduringly drive a pole-saw ~3m away ?
versus a motor at the end of pole saw blade .. guess i need to see one in the flesh.

2x 18v batteries power the motor which then in turn rotates a splined shaft inside a tube. There are locking and locating mechanisms at the end of each which interlock. The nice thing is the power unit can be changed for instance I think there is a single 18v one (probably a little underpowered), 40v version (newer) and a petrol one. There are also hedge trimmer ends, strimmer, brush cutter, edger, leaf blower, broom, tiller etc

I was actually just considering a DUX60 myself, as I already have other Makita tools. I have a patch of empty land behind my house, probably 20x30 ft that’s overgrown with brambles etc, so I was hoping I could use the brush cutter blade attachment to clear that, and subsequently then maintain it. I’d just be concerned as to whether an electric brush cutter would have the chutzpah to do the job over petrol, because I’d prefer to do without the hassle of getting petrol etc, when I already have a pair each of 4 and 5ah Makita batteries lying around.

the brush cutter is fairly capable, couple it with the pole saw and I would expect
You to be covered for even the meanest brambles. As you say then it’s a case of maintain it.
