EV general discussion

I've often mentioned that due to my job an EV would add extra hassle and time to my working week. Well for balance, this week the opposite is true.

I've had back to back trips of about 210 - 240 miles, ending up back home in between. Within the realms of possibility in an EV without having to charge. The Astra has a crappy range in PHEV form (400 miles from a full tank and battery) so I'm having to fill up daily as well as chucking it on charge every night.

While BEV wasn't an option this time round it has to be a strong contender for it's replacement. I could do with dropping the BIK as well as that is pushing me up a tax bracket.

In theory that is 2 to 3 years away but we've got one of the lads joining the sales team and he'll need a car at some point. Maybe I can palm the Astra off on him and expedite the process!
79kWh MEB seems to be ignored. Huge battery for the car really

Most new cars are ugly (or just generic but that is another story), I often wonder who they were designed for - I can't imagine anyone asked for a car looking like so many new cars.
Alas Aerodynamics and the need to adhere to safety regs determine styling more than aesthetic taste. You couldn't get a E-type or Dino though modern safety regs if you tried

That doesn't mean they need to be as ugly as so many are with hideous grills and weird light layouts, etc.

BIK on ev's is 3% this tax year, rising to 4% 26/27 and 5% 27/28.
Yup, better than 12% rising to 13% then 14% on my current £40k (LOL) Astra.

@jpaul At the moment I get 14p/mile. One of the few things the Astra is good for is fuel economy so I do OK on that front. HMRC now have split rates for EV mileage rates, 8p/mile for home charging and 14p/mile for public. Even if the latter is a touch low you can coin it in on the home charging so it would balance out. Overall on an EV tariff I think I'd be marginally better off fuel wise with an EV.

Fair play for replying. It’s on HMRC websites and easy to find. But Google fu guy seems to go abstract

Not sure if his Lego outfit is worse. What are those trousers ???

Haha, good spot. I have a theory that the shorter a person’s full length trousers are, the more “unstable” they are. If they also have white socks, well they should be avoided entirely:D

Took the daughter to school this morning and when i got there and put it in park there was an High voltage battery error please schedule a service with Hyundai

Turned it back on after dropping her off and no sign of it, giving the 12v battery a good charge just in case as they seem a weak point but that might be wishful thinking on my part!

We're heading off on holiday for a week this afternoon so not amazing timing.. :(

First charge of the car with Octopus Intelligent Go and it failed to charge. Looks like it just couldn't wake the car up for the session. Been on to Ohme support and they've pushed a CP Wake up fix to my unit. Got to re-test over the coming days. Fingers crossed!

Do you have a Volkswagen EV?

Well, after 26 months, 33k miles and £831 spent on electricity, yesterday I chopped in the Polestar 2 for a shiny Mercedes Benz EQC. It’s a year older but only has 31k miles instead of 50k and despite only being the AMG Line trim with (awfully) no premium packs, it DOES have the driving assistance pack with adaptive cruise - an incredibly rare option pack and not one I was going to do without!

How come you went with an older model, was it a cracking price or something else?

Mainly because I wanted a Mercedes again - the EV’s weren’t affordable when I bought the Polestar (Had to buy something as I’d written my E Class off) and it’s just a much nicer car. I think it was a good price plus it has 3 years of warranty with it through the dealership, and with only 30k miles it’ll last for years now.

Had 4 new tyres too :D

My IPACE goes back at the end of November, best car I’ve ever owned, I will be sad to see it go tbh. To relieve my sadness I’ve got a Polestar 4 Dual Motor coming to replace.

I honestly have no clue why JLR didn’t update the IPACE even now with its less than current battery tech etc it was still very hard to choose another car to match it.

We remaind a 2 car EV household, last year we spent £450 ish on electric, between us I think we did about 18k miles (these are fag packet numbers don’t get too obsessed)

I've had my Audi etron for 11 months and I've had random errors 3 or 4 times that clear when you restart the car.

Thankfully not a single actual issue with the car. It's now on 65k miles.
