*** The Official Nintendo Switch 2 ***

Been playing a lot of Street fighter 6, my most played Switch 2 dedicated game and maybe my favourite Switch 2 game so far, though the only other Switch 2 dedicated games I have are Donkey Kong Bananza, MK World and No Man's Sky. It's a credit to how well that Switch 1 games run that I've picked up a couple of Switch 1 games too, Gundam Breakers 4 was on a massive sale and plays a lot nicer on Switch 2. Joins a long list of Switch 1 games with better performance on Switch 2 without even getting new patches, including cities Skylines, Panzer Dragoon, etc.

Obviously SF6 is terrible for most people on the standard joycon buttons, I usually use Pro Contoller 1, and with no Hori d-pad or equivalent out yet for Switch 2, I had to get these attachments for when I'm on the road not wanting to carry extra controllers. These simple mods actually work great and make the joycons much better for any fighting or retro game.

...
SF6 is one of my favourite ever fighting games alongside Tekken 3 and Soul Calibur 2, and yeah I'd rate it the best among the Switch 2 library so far too. I also have it on PC but had none of the extra content except for Terry, so it was well worth it for all the season 1 & 2 content and the convenience of playing it in the lounge too.

Getting used to the Pro 2's sensitive D-Pad took some time, but I think it's actually made me a better player as it forced me to be more precise with my inputs.

For a second controller I have the 8Bitdo Ultimate 2C (Wired/Bluetooth), great controller for the price. I still use the Pro 2 for SF6 as I've gotten used to it, but the D-Pad on the 2C seems really good(it has this subtle 'clickyness' to it) and perhaps the better option for SF6.

I tried to play Pokémon for the first time since the OGs but just found it so so boring (Violet). I am however enjoying Z-A. I barely know who any Pokémon are beyond the original 150 and even then I can probably only remember about 20 lol.

Thinking about it though. I think I've played more on my switch 2 than I did on the switch in total over multiple times I actually owned it. I have not once considered selling this at any point.

What have you been playing to stay engaged with the Switch 2 ? ( since Pokemon Z-A only just released ).

BOTW pretty much, AC:NH when I'm on my exercise bike. I also bit the bullet and played Fantasy Life which was ok albeit very childlike (then again ACNH is too).
Tbh I've racked up 90% of the time in BOTW, but if not for that I'd be playing TOTK.
Took it to a work event the other week and played local MP MK for the first time which was the first time I actually enjoyed playing the new mario kart, though I did play some balloon battle in the evening online which I enjoyed.
I also got FF Tactics but not really started that properly yet.

Just came here to ask about a controller recommendatoin. Guess I'm picking up the 8Bit Do Ultimate 2 (I think I'd prefer triggers rather than buttons)

Finally bit the bullet and picked up Outlaws for Switch 2. Played through the first section so far (until you crash land on the first proper planet) and loving it so far. Fits perfectly with the bursty play sessions I tend to do on the console. I did try it on our TV (4K HDR with VRR) and, well, lets just say I am enjoying it hand held*. :)

I still love the novelty factor if seeing such a game run on a handheld in complete silence (i.e. can't hear the fan) - even if the relative performance of the Switch 2 no longer makes it as surprising.

*For context the game played fine and seemed to hold a stable 30FPS but the image quality breakdown from what I can only guess is DLSS performance was beyond distracting. It wasn't helped by our TV refusing to switch into its proper "Game Mode" for some reason.

Is it likely going to be ready to grab a Switch 2 nearer Christmas? Noticed Amazon had the game bundle version cheaper recently as well at £409

Probably. Nintendo have been keeping a steady supply, but unknown if prices will be better. I suspect not, as they'll be trying to cash in on Xmas sales and new games eg. Metroid Prime 4.

I really need to play mine a bit more - initially smashed it for about 3 weeks and then have barely touched it since - probably due to my audiobook obsession atm!

I mostly played it on a 1080p monitor so upscale artifacts were probably less apparent to me, found it looked decent on a 4K display too though. Without game mode on your TV might be doing that frame blending/interpolation thing?

I find the image quality is better if you turn off film grain, and keep motion blur off. I recommend giving it a go with HDR off too.

It's definitely clear that upscaling is going on in Outlaws, especially in metalics/reflections and stuff, I really liked the visuals overall though.

Not sure on the Interpolation / blending but can confirm HDR was off at the console level (I couldn't get the icons to display "visible / not visible" at all without completely blowing everything out - I think this is also linked to the Game Mode issue tbf as the PS5 Pro was right as rain).

Visuals were fine for me as long as you didn't have a large contrast between the foreground and background. I don't think it helped that I was playing the section near the beginning at night with lots of background lights (in game). I think it would be much better in the lighter day time section I am now in. :)

In my ideal world, Nintendo saw the potential in Outlaws and have revived and part funded the cancelled sequel as a Switch 2 exclusive. Yeah, unlikely.

Related tho, Assassins Creed Shadows is strongly rumoured to be coming in December - I'd be quite surprised if it's as good a port as Outlaws. I tried Shadows on PC recently and didn't like it at all, though.

EDIT: yeah the rumour was very true:

Pikmin 4 also getting a free update, no mention of a Switch 2 upgrade though... yet

My 8 year old lost his Switch 1 on holiday with 8 games. :/

Currently talking to our travel insurers to try and get some money back on it but I'm wondering whether to upgrade him to a Switch 2 for Christmas or whether to just buy him a 2nd hand Switch 1 Oled as a direct replacement.

He mainly plays Super Smash Bros Ultimate but I can't find any mention of a Switch 2 version and I honestly don't know if there are many essential games out for it yet.

Is it worth the upgrade at this point?

If you're buying new, and will get some cash from insurance, I'd suggest getting a Switch at this point. Yes, there aren't that many S2 only games yet but that will change as we go into next year.

Almost all Switch 1 games work on Switch 2 - Smash Ultimate has faster loading times on Switch 2 but otherwise it's the same since it hasn't had an upgrade (yet).

If you search a game on the eShop it tells you if the game is Switch 2 compatible, but it's rare to come across something not compatible.

However given your son is quite specific about what he plays maybe it's not worth it yet, even if the bigger screen is appreciated. What's essential really depends on tastes, Mario Kart World and DK were essential for me but won't be for everyone.

In terms of what's been released on Switch 2 so far, or coming soon, you can browse them here.

I’d get the new one, I don’t see much value in spending cash on an original switch at this point.

I got burned on this in the DS era by buying a DS in the early days of the 3DS. New releases worked on both initially, give it a couple of years and that stopped being the case.
