EV general discussion

I think unless you've actually driven an EV reading reviews will only get you so far as generally they'll be comparing to other EVs which as said are a totally different feel to a comparable on paper ICE car.

Yeah, I will try another dealer although that’s 2 out of the three local ones that have been a poor experience. In the past 15 years I must have bought three BMW’S from one of them and two the other!
I've never had a bad experience with any BMW dealerships as far as warranty and servicing is concerned. Or even arranging a test drive, but the cars obviously have to be available.
Audi once let me out in a customers car, very naughty.

The ID3 is fine at 70. You're not getting the same zip you were getting at 10 or 30 but it still pulls just fine. At 50 it's comfortable to overtake on country roads. It depends what you want to compare it to: the performance you're getting at low speeds feel like a hot hatch, the performance you're getting at 70 feels like a decently sprightly family car. Which, to be fair, is what the ID3 is, it's a family car not a sports car wannabe.

Well my comparison is a 210ps MK6 which has zip until you change to fourth, about 75, I'm not looking for any more.

I found an embedded video on reddit posted five years ago, the creator has a headcam and you can clearly see the speed. There is an overtake from 60-ish to 85-ish and a standing start to 70 ish, both look fine.

This is where the VZ is a lot stronger than the base line motor. It keeps going and is surprising how quick you can be going

Had my second real frustrating moment with the ID4 last weekend.
Car had been in for it's service 2 weeks earlier and now I am getting errors from the ACC almost every time it rains. Got to get it booked back in.
First the good news from the service - tyres still have 4mm tread on them after 27k, even though I don't have to pay for them as included in scheme.

Had an issue at Manchester airport back in September, when whilst we were away and the car was parked up for 2 weeks, the keyfob battery went flat. Couldn't start the car and had to use Google to understand that "place the key in the desired location" actually means, "put the bloody thing in the cupholder space". After travelling back for 6hrs and it being 5am in the morning I was not in the best of moods when this happened.

2nd issue - drove over to a local DIY store last weekend to collect something. As I left the car the display showed up installing OTA update. Spent about 25 mins inside the store and came back out. Loaded up the car and it was still installing the update. I then started getting 12v battery errors and warnings all over the display stating visit authorised workshop. Turned the car off and went for a toilet break and coffee, plus decided to give VW assisteace a call. They informed me it would be about 2hrs for as tech to come out.
Finished my coffee and went back to the car and still errors everywhere. Left it whilst I rang the long haired general to let her know what had happened. Back to the car, errors cleared, loads of loud clicking noises and the car "rebooted" itself and everything came back as normal.

Now I had pressed the button to install the update about 4hrs earlier when it was parked on the drive, so presumed it had completed what it needed to do. I can only assume that it was from then, because I didn't get the option to start the update later, it just decided to carry it out when I next locked the car.
It cost me over an hour waiting for it to complete.

Infotainment is still way too slow when entering the car to connect to the phone.

Also, I have now lost access to internet radio after 2 years. It's now part of the connected plus package which costs £129 per year. Sod that.

Corsa nicely told us that our free six months of whatever it’s called is up and the app is now useless unless we pay £8.99 a month. Bit crap but only really used it to check the charge level before setting the charger. The Ioniq 5 is nearly 3 and have full app access. Stellantis being a bit tight.

my car (ipace) came with 3 years on all services............. the car tracking and map updates i let run out last xmas (when the car was 3). it auto updated the remote control software inc location info and charging info for an extra 12 months for free, i do not know why, possibly because before i bought it, it was a company car and the company didnt take it off their books or something and auto paid for it?

either way that is due to end this xmas. i cant be without that so i guess i will have to suck that one up, i think it is £60 for 2 years. I will wait till the last minute to see if either it auto updates again or if there is a discount or something offered - but not holding my breath.

my wifes car (bmw i3) from what i can tell has life time connectivity included.

I think I mentioned 10 years on a Tesla, it’s actually 8.

They don’t block you from hotspot if to your phone either.

Even still, 2-3 years is utterly dire given how fundamental some of these connected features are to the user experience and how little data they actually use.

I dont mind the security tracking or the sat nav map updates.

the tracking is a premium feature and i can imagine does have sigificant costs. the sat nav i dont care as the car has wireless android auto/apple car play which is better anyway and free.

but the ability to see my charge levels, turn on aircon and what not should be a core feature and not a chargable extra imo. other cars include it (like my wifes i3).

depending on wether it came with 3G or 4g, that lifetime could be coming to an end very soon.
perhaps.. but i do not blame BMW to much for that, that would literally be the hardware being no longer supported and is out of bmws hands.

the car is 2018 so its had a good few years of support. its a good point however and one i never considered. dunno if it can be updated - it would be nice to think its just a simcard which is replaceable but i bet its not that simple!.

edit i quick google shows its a pita to actually check 3G vs 4G

but as ours is a 2nd gen "facelift" from 2018 it appears we will be ok. It is an expensive job to upgrade, and one that BMW do not really offer.

given the nature of this tech, really it should be designed to be a fairly painless upgrade using a modular part.

The Polestar 2 doesn't tell me how long the data lasts for and I can blast Youtube to my hearts content I feel like. I'm assuming it's 3 years but also the car seems to have a service agreement on it also, not sure if that's on all cars either. I almost want a bit more granular information than the P2 provides in all honesty.

Defo not a bash of BMW there, it is what it is ultimately, particularly for a car which has long been discontinued.

Most of the older Tesla model S cars got a 3G to 4g upgrade by virtue of the MCU upgrades almost all owners paid for. However there isn’t a 4g to 5g upgrade on the cards.

Likewise for the newer cars like the Model 3 which came on 4g, I doubt there will be a 5g upgrade path. It’s not inconceivable that those cars delivered earlier this year or last year which came on 4G could see the service degraded before the car comes to the end of its useful life.
