EV general discussion

It was Octopus who told me to connect the charger and set it to charge to make everything cheaper. Tbh why would you not they could easily just not offer spaces at peak times if they wanted. It’s all about demand in your area no one else has an EV charger where I live so I get a lot of spaces at all times. I’m sure if more get chargers in the future that will change.

It’s not that simple, part of the deal (like Ovo anytime) is they will charge your car by the ready time you set.

That opens it up for you to take the pee is they can’t read the SOC of the car. A 70kwh car will take 10 hours to charge to full from empty.

So set your ready time for 4am and you tell Ocotpus your car is empty, that means octopus has to assign at least 10 hours of charging to charge the car otherwise the tariff fails, that’s 6pm.

They’ll have to make the tariff worse for everyone to stop this kind of gaming the system.

That’s before you consider the people who turn their chargers down to maximise the cheap rate.

I set mine to 7am, Now I’m charging daily it pretty much starts charging straight away whenever I plug in. I get a lot of slots even during peak hours it’s usually charged well before 7am. I can set the charge rate in the car to lower charge speed but have not fiddled with that. Neither of my cars are added to either Octopus or the charger I just use the add so much charge percent. The ionic stops itself at %80 the Corsa is a best guess based on what’s already in it.

P.S. if you object to this, the trick is to select a non supported car with a similar/larger battery size and your charger will be enrolled

That no longer works, can't link to the source as it's on the Octopus Forums.

I know of people doing this to increase base load for saving sessions, even with the car integration, there are ways to fiddle it. It's ridiculous for the few pennies they gain.

Because it's no longer an option when onboarding, unless you call customer services, if you have an unsupported car the only way now is to call customer services to get the EVSE integration to work (onboard), its still there, just does not work.

Existing onboarded chargers are fine, its only when someone tries to add a new one.

This is what instructions they gave me as well. It's different now to before I left them in February as I just used the OHME app to charge the car. Octopus put me on Intelligent Go from 00.30 last night so I plugged the car in this morning when I got back from a trip to the vets after setting up the charger in the Octopus app. It instantly started charging the car so I stopped it and it rescheduled for 00.30 tonight to charge to 80% (it was showing the correct SOC in the app). Lunchtime I noticed a red ring around the IHD in the kitchen and the car was charging again and looking at the app was up to 75%, all at 32.7p per kWh!! It's ridiculous, you have the Octopus app trying to control the OHME app and it seems like they are cancelling each other out. There is no option for me to add the car and not the charger in the app. I am going to delete the charger from the Octopus app and just use the OHME app like I have always done, at least it sticks to the proper off peak times!!

Don't know if this has been posted, covers weight, acceleration, noise etc
torque curve on 200bhp id3 says a lot on overtakes V
unfortunately the newer cars with the more efficient 550 motor/280bhp&pre-conditioning not yet at my 20K prices (ford explorer seems to be approaching fastest)
Non-dcc car with higher profile tyres maybe another option for comfort too, after all replacing worn adaptive dampers probably not cheap , that, also combats local pot-holes.

the APP550 has a longer gear ratio. Those 550 Nm wouldn't have been able to be delivered to the road with a short transmission anyway. So, comparing the ID.4 APP310 vs. the ID.7 APP550, the APP550 delivers "only" 8.2% more power when starting off, not 77.4% as one might assume at first glance. From 3600 rpm, the maximum output of 210 kW is reached, which corresponds to 61.6 km/h for the ID.7.

Well the ID.7 has broken down again today.

Driving along and the infotainment completely died, like last time.

This time the screens have recovered, however many warning signs and generally unhappy - funny sounds through speakers, bongs, no cameras/cruise/speed limiter, HUD on and off, speedo on and off.

Really have had enough of this car and I'm completely stuck with it. I've only JUST had a case handler assigned to me for the Financial Ombudsman, Alphabet gave me a final letter back in April or May I think it was, and nothing from them since.

VW have just outright refused to help any further because the car is owned my Alphabet.

Has anyone owned a Leaf (new style) and how did you get on with it?

Can't speak from long term ownership perspective but the biggest negatives are the charging standard support and that it is an older platform underneath even where they have updated it - which personally I don't mind but some might. For me the Tekna trim level is a plus if some might find it too understated. Fairly quiet, smooth and responsive to drive though doesn't have the refinement of some of the premium marques.

I've been umming and arring over having one as an additional runabout given the current prices but my lifestyle has a big hang up (despite it being an edge case scenario it does happen so there isn't a compromise) when it comes to EVs as things stand.

Tbh I do 16 miles a day commute and that’s about as far as I’d drive it usually.
My Focus ST225 at best does around 20mpg and is going to need a clutch and a few bits soon, and frankly I’m just looking to save money.
I’ve got a 200bhp bike if I want to have fun + after 35 years in the motor trade my interest in cars (especially EV’s) isn’t very much to say the least.
This is local to me..

Hopefully the steering wheel is at that angle because someone was lazy parking it for the photos :o

It is crazy what you can get year and mileage wise for the Leafs currently - there are 22 and 23 plate ones on sale around me with as low as 6K miles for that kind of money (about 12-13K for 6K miles).

This is right around where most owners should expect their MEB EV (or any other modern EV) be after 4 years.

I see far too often where people argue 10% in two years is perfectly normal degradation in an EV. Or some that 10% is perfectly acceptable in one year. I’m sorry but it categorically isn’t.

My Born 77kWh was bought used at just over 19000 miles and 22 months old and it had 98.7% SoH. After adding 3,400 miles in 5 months ODB11 carscanner shows Max Energy Content (MEC) as 74500 and that is with the battery sitting at 10c and unused for a day or two. So 97% at almost 2.5 year old and 23,400 miles.

If I were to run it below 10% and charge to 100% to warm the battery and allow the BMS to do its thing, I could get that to about 98%.

Mine is obviously above average for SOH and I don’t mollycoddle it. I charge to 80%, discharge to about 35% and have charged to 100% once in 5 months. In 5 years of EV ownership I have HAD to use public rapid chargers twice out of necessity.

Some links to actual owner groups testing SOH on their ID.4s over the years.

funnily enough i have just messaged my sister inlaw with a couple of options for a 2nd car and they want an EV...... possible will be useful here too - just examples not specifically that car but .

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202509226538787 Zoe, cheap and cheerful, perfect 2nd car. 30k miles so at upper limit of mileage but under £10k!. 30k miles would not even enter my head as a concern personally.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202505132357270 Leaf (larger car but with chademo fast charging but with almost 200 mile genuine range will it matter? - chademo will be around for a good while yet anyway and it means more car for your money as it does put some off.) 30k miles so at upper limit of mileage

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202506213746797 kona (larger car with faster charging, a little more expensive, a little lower spec than the above but low mileage - the higher spec model may cost more unless you get a higher miler)

note there are obviously other options, these were suggestions for sis in law with a very specific brief i am just pasting the message i sent her in case it is useful for anyone looking for similar)

You are way more patient than me. If I was stuck with that lemon it would have been involved in a tactical crash long ago :p

I do think a lot of people are getting a bit wiser to the entire concept that EVs are totally viable daily use cars. Yes they don’t suit everyone but those people are a minority. I started on EVs because I got a cheap salary sacrifice deal. So the way most change is not because of a conscience about the environment, but the impact on their pocket.

I was recently talking to someone about climate change. They basically agreed climate change is real but that humans weren’t the cause. Instead of arguing that they were wrong (they are), I said possibly, but we can slow it down. I used an analogy, “if you saw a small child about to walk on the road, would you ignore them because you didn’t cause that scenario, or would see fit to intervene to prevent a catastrophe?

So saying “yes climate change is real but I won’t do anything to help” is a cop out.
