What Linux Operating Systems do you like?

After over a year I'm still using CachyOS primarily for home use even after hopping to here and there. It really is a polished piece of work (though not immune to the foibles of it's rolling nature) for an Arch based distro with clunkiness reduced to a minimum. Which although I like it; PikaOS which I also use, especially around it's update workflow could benefit from (the two projects share some features & resources).

Yes, it is what it is and It's productive, but I can't help feeling a bit off with all the telemetry they're pulling from you.

To be fair you can happily do that with many of the Linux distros about, if I didn't care about "modern" stuff like FSR4, HDR, Wayland etc I think I'd happily pick something like Mint or maybe Kubuntu (maybe the LTS version)

Well , you don't need to install VM or proxmox to test a 100 different versions of windows to find out you've wasted your time for sake of a different skin, icons and fonts.

Users just need to weep into their cupper when microsoft piddles about with the start menu.

I hazzard a guess that you're talking about moving the mouse around the desktop?

RGB for example is rarely point,click and get on with your life under linux.

Exactly, i'm not interested playing that game of whack-a-mole any longer, though i'm not happy with the amount of AI that's creeping towards linux.

No it's running as an unraid server actually.

I do have a Beelink Mini ( n105) and a GMKTec m5plus ( Ryzen 5850U ) that will happily run a Linux/Freebsd desktop. Standard stuff mind you, no gaming, heavy video editing etc.

As for the distro hopping, I've got too much time on my hands , otherwise I would simply settle for a distro and leave it at that. Probably Debian.

I'll probably end up on Pop!_OS base and then slowly drive myself Nutz hopping between the Cosmic, Gnome and KDE Plasma desktop.

An atomic distro like Nixos is ideal for this illness, although the learning curve with Nixos in particularly is like a second job lol.

Thankfully I don't bother changing my RGB lol, signalRGB set a "profile" year or two back and it's stuck between OS's, but no I do relatively new things on Linux which is why I like Cachy (or EndeavourOS) mostly since it makes doing those things easier

If I had to use Windows again, I would probably try Windows 10 LTSC, as it is still supported until 2029/2032.

As it is a bare-minimum OS, however i would not be surprised if the telemetry features returned in some form once you begin installing all the software suites required for gaming and so on.

Not been much interesting unfortunately. I have no interest in distro-swapping/suggesting these days, same with DE/WMs. I use what I use, it's all ancient and it's all the way I like it. So I have so little to add to newer people to Linux, because my setup is so old-fashioned. Plus become a bit jaded with some of the new fangled stuff, Ala Omarchy and funding etc. More and more on BSD these days.

Ive been playing around with winboat, its pretty cool stuff if you have anything left you really need windows for that wine cant solve. For me its syncing my ipod classic to itunes, works great with winboat and usb passthrough. I used to run a vm on one of my mini pcs just for this task. Just a call out to say its worth checking out https://github.com/TibixDev/winboat its basically a VM wrapped in docker wrapped in a nice UI which can RDP you into a specific app.
