Bought a gen 5 nvme.

I bought the Crucial T705 2TB for what I felt was a good price £166 I've got a Tomahawk X870E motherboard to use it in. I had no plans whatsoever to buy gen5 I just felt this was a decent opportunity to try the new tech. I hear it runs hot but hopefully the heatsinks on the motherboard will do a decent job. I needed a drive as this is new build. I'll using for windows 11 and apps maybes the odd game. I've got a gen4 wd black SN850X for games and that's 4TB. So all should hopefully be good. Was just surprised to get a gen5 drive so cheap.

Any time the issue of gen 5 comes up on here, people normally say it's no better in real-world performance than gen 4. Having upgraded recently and reused my gen 4 drives, I'd be really interested to know how you get on with it.

For a new build, it makes sense to get the latest generation of components, if the cost increase isn't too much.

I'm still using gen 4 drives, mostly for running VMs, and barely max these out. If the extra heat output it real, that may be an issue for me as all my fans are on a silent profile.

gen5 drives run hot at full load
but like pointed out, it is same speed in real life
so at same load it should be same power or even less than gen4

I have been looking to swap my 500GB OS drive to a 1TB. I currently have gen 4 firecuda 530 500gb and just found a cheap WD Black SN8100.

Worth going gen 5?

I bought it in the end, it was the last one and £111 for a WD black SN8100. I thought it was a good deal.

It was a good price £111 for a WD black SN8100. It was their last one, so got it while it was still there.

I've had the same 2TB T705 since July when I built a new system, I've been very hapyp with it. It's my system/games drive, I can't say I particularly notice it performing any better than my Gen4 SN7100 but I figured if I was getting a Gen5 capable motherboard I might as well get the storage to use it, plus it was better value than some of the newer Gen5 drives without sacrificing performance.

Temps seem fine too, currently at mostly idle it's sitting at 49 degrees, warmer than my SN7100 and SN750 which are 35 and 39 dgrees respectively, but doesn't seem like anything to worry about.
