"Just stop oil"

Just an FYI, JSO haven’t broken into any military bases or vandalised any military planes.

I don’t think thy are that stupid.

Nasher tho innit :D

I don't think they should pay for the damage tbh. I think they should fix the damage. To the same standards it was in. If they screw it up, then strip it and start again. And again. And again. Until it's absolutely 100% perfect.

That way they learn a life skill too and might even get a proper job afterwards. If they can find someone stupid enough to employ them obvs.

It was probably the big decision on whether to use methylated spirits or turps.

I just had to ask CoPilot :)

Methylated spirits are generally cheaper than genuine turpentine in the UK, often by a factor of 2–3 depending on the brand and volume.

Here’s a breakdown of current prices for both solvents:

Methylated Spirits (UK Prices)

  • 500ml bottles: £4.50–£5.59 (£9–£11.18 per litre)
  • 1 litre bottles: Around £9.35
  • 5 litre containers: ~£21.49 (£4.30 per litre)

Genuine Turpentine (UK Prices)

  • 500ml bottles: £11.98–£12.50 (£23.96–£25.00 per litre)
  • 1 litre bottles: £19.78–£29.50
  • 2.5 litre containers: ~£33.15 (£13.26 per litre)

Summary of Cost Difference

  • Per litre, methylated spirits range from £4.30 to £11.18, while genuine turpentine ranges from £13.26 to £29.50.
  • Turpentine is typically 2–3 times more expensive than methylated spirits, especially in smaller volumes.

Why the Price Gap?

  • Methylated spirits are denatured alcohol, widely used for cleaning, fuel, and thinning shellac.
  • Turpentine is a natural resin distillate from pine trees, preferred by artists and restorers for its compatibility with oil-based products and its pleasant scent.
If you're restoring vintage gear or prepping finishes, turpentine may offer better results with linseed oil or beeswax blends, but methylated spirits are more economical for general cleaning and shellac work. Want help benchmarking solvent compatibility for your tremolo restoration workflow? I can map that out next.

This country is so pathetic, I'm pretty sure our government work to the Benny Hill theme on repeat :D

When people look back in 50 years time and talk about who was in the right back in the early part of the 21st century.....

I'm pretty sure it's not going to be Shell, BP, Exxon and the like, it'll be people like JSO, Greenpeace, etc.

50 years time when it will be basically Mad Max and everyone will be running round in V8's nicking petrol?
Doubt it. :D
