OcUK Dadsnet thread

Well, after a good run our youngest finally started her inevitable “just started nursery bugs’. She lasted right up until the end of her third week minus 2 hours, our eldest was as sick as a dog after only 3 days when she started 18 months ago.

We’re so much more relaxed and objective about the appropriate care/actions this time round in terms of not panicking, knowing what actions to take etc etc.

Poor little thing is suffering but she’ll be ok in a couple of days.

Fortunately the other half has accrued a ridiculous amount of holiday during her maternity to cover it.
This has since resulted in 3 nights at our local hospital after 2 A&E trips, absolutely heartbreaking to watch our little one slowly decline over a few days to a point where she’d just lie there and move her eyeballs only.

Despite our best and persistent efforts she became dehydrated and we needed some intervention to help to get her on the right track. She’s a slender little child in the first place, and lost 15% in BW very quickly. She’s a reflux baby and we think a combination of the bug she has, eventual sore tonsils from vomiting consistently, and her finding it VERY easy to vomit anyway placed us in a vicious cycle.

I’m able to talk about it now but mum and I were a complete state at the time, fortunately she’s on the right track and is keeping food/liquids down.

These nursery bugs give me the fear, based on all I’ve heard.
I think it just depends on the kid, our elder daughter did suffer with the initial set of bugs as expected but was a chunky thing so she had the weight to lose so to speak, and didn’t vomit as a matter of course

We're going to try Pampers first as inlaws recommended them as said they're definitely better at keeping leaks in, some folks in the antenatal group have said Aldi ones are good though. Would like to know what the Sainsburys ones are like as that's where we usually shop but not had any direct reviews about them...

@Mekrel we used Aldi and have never had a single significant leak. The only leaks we have had are bedtimes where she has been very tossy/turny when a bit under the weather and even then it was just a small amount of wee at the legs.

And that kid has deposited some serious dumps of varying...states of matter.

We've found that different brands work best at different ages. Aldi seems great for newborns, but we found that Tesco's own brand (I forget what they're called) are better from size 3-5 ish, and they are often price matched to Aldi. They feel far more premium too.

Yea we use Aldi nappies , we found them just as good as pampers, Huggies etc and half the price.

Also wouldn’t recommend reusable , just imagine washing that with all of your other laundry , it will likely cross contamination of everything else .

We had a rough night last night. Baby's nearly 10 months old. Apart from a bout of gastroenteritis a few months ago, she's never really been ill. She had a temp of over 38C last night, breathing rapidly in her sleep, making all sorts of weird sounds, and then she vomited for the first time ever, so we took her into A&E. They were great - not many children in there at 2 AM on a Sunday night / Monday morning.

We're dosing her up with Calpol and Nurofen in the hope of bringing her temperature down. She's super cute still, poor baby.

I think I might be a little late to the party as my daughter is nearly 31.
But I remember all the trials and tribulations as a young parent.

Now just have to deal with all the bugs and illness my wife brings home from school (she’s a teacher) as I catch every bloody thing the small walking virus riddled kids circulate.

Don't listen to them @Maccy. You're just in for a time. Congrats though, it's a cool club to be in! I never actually wanted to join this club but once I was in, wish I came in earlier (terrible phrasing)

We sold our Baby Brezza yesterday. We're fairly sure we're happy with the one.... Which probably means we're going to end up needing to buy another one down the line

Nursery hasn't been to cruel to me so far. Though, when my friend told me he had never been as ill as when his kids started nursery I realise he was not playing about. Hand Foot and Mouth was the highlight for me. I also had a fabulous case of conjunctivitis too

Congratulations mate, you'll soon see many of the parental things you didn't think you would do will become broken promises :D

The thing I wasn't prepared for was the onslaught of emotions. Genuinely think I've cried more in the last 3.5 years than I had at any other period in my life. All sorts of things set me off now. We were watching Muppets Christmas Carol last year, yep. crying. Coco!? I was on the ropes fighting for my life
