I know ive posted about upgrading my wheels and even getting an electric car. But.... i might have decided on something completly different, but looking for views

So im 50 in a fews months time and im looking at a Maserati Ghibli as a nice birthday pressie. I only do around 3k miles a year as i work from home. Even with my recent car write off, i have had an insurance quote on the Mazza and its only £100 more than my current insignia....

So anyone has any views or thoughts on the Mazza... it will be around a 2014 car, 90k on the clock and circa 9k purchase price.

You are going to get a load of joyless miseries telling you how daft it is, how unreliable it'll be, how you won't be able to trust it, how you should definitely get some bland, grey, rep mobile that every other sod on your road has in their driveway too.

Ignore them. Choose life. Who cares? Pick something that's going to give you joy when you look out the window at it, and when you sit in the driver seat. Life's too short to drive dull cars.

a 9k maserati...no thanks!

YOLO ...But probably not for long.

Don't a lot of these need engine rebuilds?

There are fun cars, but then there are fun cars with engines which can **** themselves at any moment. Which makes them less fun.

If it's your only car, factor in winter wear and tear... Ie salt, rust etc.

I can't imagine many Maseratis, especially older models, are used as a primary car. Most will be fair weather use only.

Why the Ghibli?

If you're buying it because it's cheap but "exotic", I'd say think carefully. Things are likely to go wrong and they will be expensive to fix.

It's also a diesel and this would not be my choice for this type of car.

If you want something big and fast then a Jaguar might be a better idea.

all 2nd hand cars can go wrong.... and why not diesel?

Jaguar is also in my thought process too, but at the moment the Mazza is winning

If you are set on it, it has to be a V8 one. A diesel is just going to feel like a commuter and it's over 1.8 tonnes with 270hp, so it's going to get dusted by every hot hatch.

im 50, im not a boy racer thats gonna be racing hot hatches....

But what's the point in buying a Mazzerati if you aren't going to drive it like an Italian and blast V8 noises. It's going to cost loads in maintenance, but has the same hp/ton as a 1989 Lexus LS400.
