Valve Index 2 (codenamed Deckard) Standalone

A sort of sidegrade on the q3. Definitely an option for those who haven't yet got a q3. Though the big question will of course be price. There's some argument that you can charge more due to some features (and ignore the backwards steps), but if it's £1k, I think it's dead on arrival to a large degree.

Pancake lenses really seem to be kicking OLED arses at the moment.

I will wait for more hands on feedback on the displays seeing as they LCD.
Sounds like they nailed the wireless side of things. The controllers and unit itself weight/ comfort seems good enough.

It really will boil down to the display. If the sweet spot and image clarity is great, along with good brightness then it might make up lack of OLED.....

Guess will find out next year.

i thought about this a bit more over night, one of the things steam are doing is setting the bar / standard.

"if you want your games to sell, be it flatscreen or VR it has to work on this spec" Steam Frame / Steam Console or a combination of both.
this will be the standard for the next 5years i think. which i think we need as there isnt a "standard" at the moment.
its laying the ground work for future.

it will sper more people to make the jump there are also plenty of people that wont touch meta.

i might wait for the updated version of the steam frame - colour pass through and maybe OLED. but to be honest i don't have issues with the Q3.
and the vast majority of people are using LCD screens at home.
i can only think a few reasons / games i use colour passthrough i.e. watching moves, triangle strategy, space city folk, and a few others.

tabletop simulator would be a good use of MR and its a popular title for socal board gaming online, if some what quirky.

How is it the standard? Steam sells very little hardware

Xbox sells more hardware than Valve and Xbox can't even set the standard

its setting the minimum spec standards for Games and VR

not the standard hardware vender.

sorry if that was mis communicated.

just to add, newer hardware doesnt = better performance,
just more room to not optimize code.
this would i feel force some better coding practices and optimization.

its just my thoughts on it. i understand why a lot of people in here are disappointed as your all classed as "early adopter" and been in the space for 5+ years.
this move really seems to be about onboarding more people to the echo system. which from the VR side we kind of need, we need more developers coming out with good titles, for that, there needs to be a user base to support it, or capacity for it.

I watched part of a video about it. Had to stop when the reviewer stated that it was the “ideal” PCVR headset.
Ideal for who exactly?
Not me, I’d like one without a battery, and a DPMI port.

I may be in the minority, but that’s a pass for me.

That's a very good point.

I have The Falconer game which is fun in VR. A remaster is currently in release and people are asking about whether the remaster will come out in VR...

The dev has basically said no at this time as there simply isn't enough interest to warrant the time which is a shame. But he gave the reasoning why and it's understandable.

So literally getting more VR sets out to the masses is key for the platform.

Which makes this release make a lot of sense.

If you look at what actually sells in the relatively small market, it’s not expensive PC based headsets, it’s cheaper standalone units like the quest.

Stuffing it with expensive screens and optics mean it’s never going to hit a sensible price point.

Valve going full Apple was never going to work and I totally get why they have gone down this route.

Quest 3 without the Meta cancer will be a buy from me if the pricing is sensible.

Yep. Pricing will be key. I am in no rush, but if they get pricing right will eventually pick it up. Not had a VR headset in a few years now. This would be my 3rd one if I get it.

If they did a version with QLED Screens with local dimming I'd be all over this, but LCD just looks so bad in dark games. Quest 3 is on paper a better headset than my Quest Pro, due to the resolution and processor, but I use the Pro for PCVR simply because the QLED screens are super bright, vibrant, and have amazing contrast due to the dimming.

Unfortunately this is not the upgrade I've been looking for. I'm not even that fussed about it not being super high-res, it's just the colours and contrast of LCD that's the issue. (That said, if my Pro died, I'd get this for PCVR if there wasn't a high-end headset that I liked).
