*** Valve Steam Machine ***

Ok I th
I can't see prices either. Not sure if @Stovepipes means something else.
My mistake I was looking at the Valve Index VR Kit. Ignore me.

Hardware Unboxed are going to give the Steam Machine a savage review if it isn't cheap. They have been advocating 8GB VRAM is too low for modern gaming for a long time now.

Oooft.

I think this is great over all but there are games that won’t run on SteamOS due to anti cheat not being compatible with the os

I think that needs fixing, yes windows can be installed to avoid that but for this to take off the average user won’t do that

Valve could really make a big disruption into consol segment with a device like this if done right

Ultimately I think we're going to be disappointed by this thing, due to the explosion of memory/storage costs.
I absolutely love the form factor, and the power is more than enough for under my TV. I just feel like it has come a year too late though.

Definitely understand the frustration of some. A shame they've opted for only 8gb vram.

Looks interesting.

Obviously they are using the Apple (etc al) play book.

Release it under specced to capitalise on the masses of FOMOS.

Then release a "pro" model to tempt the FOMOS into double dipping and any other people who now feel the specs are worth it.

Underwhelming specs for me, but nice form factor.

This is begging for an "orange box" version!

8GB Ram on the GPU is fine depending on settings this whole it’s not possible to play games good enough Is a load of crap

I’m using a 3070Ti, can run BF6 in high at 1080p no issues, same for many other games

can run some games in 4k too not many granted but it’s not unusable for everything like its made out to be.

My guess at the price will be £600. There is no way they could realistically price it higher than a PS5 Pro as the comparison's between the two would be utterly savage but the cost of PC components such as RAM and GPU's right now probably mean that Valve won't want to take a loss on each unit as there is no guarantee that buyers will actually use it to buy Steam games.

A lot of people are being swept away by the hype and their Valve fanboyism. If the Steam machine is priced at £600 it is terrible value for money. Outdated hardware from day one, games with anti cheat won't work and modern big budget games that don't require anti cheat will run poorly, no upgrade path and cheaper alternatives which are more powerful.

But you can get a companion cube decal to stick on the front and we can call it a GabeCube.

Everyone seems to be getting their nickers in a twist over something they have no idea what the price will actually be.

The price is fundamental to how well or poorly almost any product will be recieved, without it, any conversation about 'value' is utterly pointless.

Depending on the price, this could be my way back into PC gaming and assume this would be easier to optimise PC games for. Couldn't justify the prices after the RTX 30 Series card launch.

PS5 for exclusives and possibly the Steam Machine for everything else.

Still confident it will be priced around the PS5 mark as probably their aim to get console players into pc gaming.

My gut feeling is the price is somewhere between £450 and £700 for depending on model. That said Valve did say somewhere the Steam Machine would available on it's own without a controller so I don't know how that works, i.e. will they have four separate prices, or will the controller simply be something you're expected to buy as add-on.

As we've seen with GPU launches, Switch 2 and PS5 Pro I do think people will react badly to the final price, although Valve were very aggressive when they first launched the Steam Deck so I don't know, it depends whether they behave the same with this.

I can't see developers optimising games for the Steam Machine unless it starts selling numbers on par with the Xbox at the very least. At best they'll include a preset like '1080p 60FPS/4k 30FPS/4k 60FPS FSR'.

Tbf there are loads of optimised Steam Deck games. BeamNG, Enshrouded, Doom (2016)/Eternal, Ball X Pit all have Steam Deck versions and there are loads of games that have 'Steam Deck' presets. More so in the indie space. Then you have the patches from Valve for games like Elden Ring on Steam OS when that came out.

I think even if this new Steam Machine only sells 4-6m, or similar numbers to the Steam Deck it still means loads more Steam OS boxes out there and I think with that kind of presence it will be harder to ignore. I don't think it will be prioritised in the way a PS5/6, or Switch 2 will be, but outside of the big PC services like Roblox, Fortnite, WoW and stuff that isn't on Steam if you're a PC developer it's something you may want to think about.

I’ve got a 9th gen i9 and a rtx 2080, I’m contemplating it instead of upgrading my PC.

Given the specs of this Steam Box, doesn't seem like an 'upgrade' to an i9 and RTX 2080.

Digital Foundry also released a video discussing it and have the same sort of conclusions as the most of the other media coverage:
  • CPU is decent, 6-cores is fine and AM4 still holds up very well
  • From factor is very nifty, not often to get a gaming capable machine in such a size, especially for a PC.
  • Major misstep with the anaemic GPU, not only is it weaker than a 6600XT, but only has 8GB VRAM, which going forward would even struggle in 1080p games
  • Another potential misstep with HDMI 1.4, though apparently they have tested that it can run HDMI 2.0 speeds, but doesn't qualify for 2.0 due to some 2.0 functionality not met. Adaptive sync like FreeSync, etc is a feature from HDMI 2.0 that this does seem to have, but might only work through the DisplayPort.
  • Aimed at being simpler plug-and-play introduction to PC gaming
  • ...except the hardware choices make that tricky too, since users will likely need to fiddle with and turn down settings to get playable framerates
  • Marketed as a 4k machine... which makes sense given a potential intended purpose to be used in the living room where people commonly have 4K TVs. But doesn't make sense since the hardware can't manage 4k gaming, even with upscaling it's barely feasible
  • SteamOS will make things interesting and potentially one of the biggest selling points of this hardware.
  • Controller doesn't sound like it's included, unlike consoles. Likely to be in a seperate bundle, of course costing more.

As mentioned with GPU discussions in the past, there's no such thing as a bad product, just bad pricing. How this does all comes down to pricing, e.g. folks liked the Nvidia Shield TV due to how cheap and nifty it was for various things. Something like this can't be priced any more than $600, ideally $500 to be considered average or $400 or below to really open eyes and be an option for budget PC gaming.

My prediction... Valve will pull an AMD and likely mess this up. Technically, they already have with some of the hardware choices for this thing.

I've watched a fair amount of stuff on this now and I'm pretty much 100% convinced that the Steam Machine is intended as a direct upgrade/partner for the Steam Deck.

Valve have said before that a lot of Steam Decks are almost permanently connected to a TV/monitor. That's very likely true - I know mine is.

Why else would they be saying its "6 x faster than a Steam Deck" in the limited information they've supplied so far? Pretty strange comparison unless that IS your target market. It means nothing to anyone who doesn't have one.

So based on current UK Steam Deck pricing I don't think you're going to see much change out of £850 for the base Steam Machine. Add on another £150 for the one with more storage.

As an aside its an interesting design and I can see the same people who worked on the Steam Deck thermals worked on this....

As I said I wouldn't be surprised to see more presets pop up but I really can't see it selling enough to have the major players crafting builds specifically for the hardware. There will be a few like the deck, which I think has a better argument for hardware tailored builds due to it's limitations, but I think it's optimistic to think many AA/AAA releases are going to be optimised for the hardware and anything less demanding shouldn't have much issue running anyway.

Not even the switch had 3rd party Devs putting much time into making sure their games ran and looked great and that sold over 100m units
