PIA

Pakistan International Airlines.

They all, always, have mountains of excess baggage in cardboard boxes and it takes ages to process.

Hence the queues...
Ah ha.

Never experienced them personally, I will however avoid Paris CDG at all costs after one visit there.

heard some horror stories about them in Manchester.

planes being turned back round to ISB for cleaning etc. .

You took a flight from a third world airline and you're surprised that you got a third world experience? Aren't you old enough to know better?

Slightly related, this brought back memories of South Africa back in 1994 when apartheid ended. Black people were now allowed to fly on SAA, and loads of them turned up to Joburg Airport with chickens in cages. As this was brand new to SAA and they didn't have any policies in place, they let these folks get on the plane and their caged chickens were sat in the back of the place on empty seats. The chickens then spent the whole flight panicking and making a racket and ******** all over the seats. It was so bad it actually made the papers :D

Weird times.

Back in the day, I took Air India from London to New York and it was fine.

Flight originated in Mumbai but you could get a ticket for the LHR-JFK leg. Not sure what this kind of flight was called where you get a ticket for the second leg of a flight originating in another country but it was quite common, and cheap. Not sure if any airlines still operate this model via LHR.

PIA was actually a very well regarded airline back in the day, it played a crucial role in setting up emirates airlines but it has fallen in standards since then, Am sure the international flights would probably be fine but I would be hesitant to fly them myself as they have had crashes in the past on the national flights due to only flying with 1 engine

I did a stint of Heathrow to Pune, with change in Dubai or Delhi, often on Jet Airways for the main leg and then Air India/Indigo etc for the short leg.

I remember the got everyone off the plane in Dubai, had the engine cowling up and hitting things inside with hammer for 30 min.. then we all boarded and safely made our way to Pune. I still have the photo somewhere from the ramp.

I flew the last trip just before Jet Airlines went into liquidation. Shame .. they gave me a bunk up from business to first class :D Coming over the Pakistan/North Indian mountain ranges with snow etc was beautiful. It's actually on my phone as one of the profile images.
