DRAM Prices Surge 172% YoY with No Signs of Slowing Down

I might bag a new gfx card before prices go north but im staying AM4 and have 32gig ram so i 'should' be ok for the forceable i hope.

Good idea to debloat/declutter Windows, saved couple of GB memory usage.

If i was buying a complete new PC then a couple of hundred on the RAM wouldnt put me off. however are these prices going to continue to rise... if 32gb in a month or 2 is 500-600... Are there any chinese ram makers that will jump on the PC gaming market to fill the gap...

The US sanctioned most of them, otherwise they would have been ramping up quicker.

So what has caused the jump exactly other than "AI"? I mean "AI" has been knocking around for ages at this point, then all of sudden, the ram gets gobbled up. Feels like there is some funny business going on, ram manufacturers have been caught at it before.

AI companies inking deals to take up all current and future stock to deprive competitors from resources, they will now also have to overpay for, to keep up... AI arms race.

So that's everything shafted again then :(. I guess gpus will be next and it will be like it was with the 30 series where all the entry level "cheaper" ones don't exist as the limited supply is used for the higher models.

I am completely out of touch with it, but I don't get the endgame with AI or how they plan to make up all the money. Nothing "AI" I've seen yet is amazing and something to "sell". I guess I am just out of touch.

I feel left out of the "AI" as well. I've used ChatGPT a few times, it's OK. Google's AI overview is OK. I tried Topaz AI for some video upscaling, it's OK.

However, I wouldn't pay for any of it

Undersold my 32GB kit a week ago, it's now doubled in price. I'm concerned I should have kept it, what if my new 48GB kit fails and RMA is impossible? :(

That is one reason why I have carried a couple of spare sets of DDR5. The memory that I am using is already out of stock where I got it from. I would need the memory more than the money I could sell it for.

right now as everyone is rushing to buy, basic economics theory dictates sale will be affected over the long run. I hope not and I am wrong, but I see many putting off upgrading their build, its all over the comments on various Youtube related channels and forum. The gpu prices are due to increase, ram prices have increased, hd prices are due to increase and I bet you motherboard and cpu prices will most likely increase too. This is going to last few years at worst and 6-12 months at best.

but I will be honest, chatGpt and Gemini are very useful for educational purposes even though their accuracy is questionable at times. I don't see AI going away, but right now its nothing but some glorified statistical models on large datasets that's AI in summary. AI will not make any major success unless some serious increase in computing power and reduction of power requirements. Its quite possible the current AI can help take steps in this direction so its too early to predict the future of AI right now but its story is just beginning.

I doubt motherboard prices will increase. What's the point in a new motherboard, when a lot of the other stuff you might want to plug in has went to the moon?
If they ramp the pricing on them, then consumers will just laugh and do something else.

The need for more hardware pushes more ram to be used also.
and none really invest in building factories to deal with this either ahead of time.
at last now ram sold make a huge profit for them
Until the AI boom crashes

I've only really just caught up with this, my 32gb kit was £98 last year, now £353!!

I really hope this isn't the start of a permanent price increase, as consumers we just don't seem to know when to put our wallets down, as Gibbo said "sales are up" which really doesn't surprise me sadly.

Seems to be only RAM effected, bought a new monitor this week and was suprised how much you get for your money.

£120 got me an Alienware 27" QHD 180hz IPS monitor, even has a solid stand with height adjustment. That would have got a cheapo 1080P panel not long ago.
