Car won't start

I have an astra h for a few years and it's been fine mostly. It's a 07 1.7 diesel.

Few weeks ago I noticed it started struggling to start but always did eventually.

Went on holiday recently and since I got back it won't start.

A year or so ago I had the battery replaced (with a second hand one) and the alternator.

Tried a jump start but it wasn't having it, did a pedal test and got some codes.

It is likely the battery, alternator went again or starter motor etc? Can anyone shed any light?

Thanks in advance.

Exceedingly likely to be a failed battery. If you can't jump start the car, it's because the battery is completely dead, and may have a failed cell.

I would suggest buying a brand new battery. I have used:

to order online, and they were good.

Diesels are hard on batteries. If you choose a battery with higher Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) it will help your car start better. I also prefer buying a high quality brand, such as Bosch.

white smoke when turning over?
does it crank or is it dead when you turn the key?
does it work better if you ignition on wait 15 sec off and on again for 15 sec before starting ?

It was one of those things where they replaced the alternator and grabbed a battery from another vehicle in case that was it lol. They said it was a better battery.

The previous battery was a lion or something like that, nothing too fancy. I don't know what the current one is but can check.

It does crank, I noticed after a slight change it tried a little longer before giving up. The more you do it the shorter the time it cranks before giving up.

I haven't noticed any white smoke or anything.

I'll try the 15 second thing and see what happens. I haven't got a multimeter but I don't mind buying one if you think it's worth it in the long run.

The electrics seem to work ok, radio lights etc.

Why would you buy a second hand battery? that's madness.

There's only one reason someone would sell a second hand battery, and that's because it's already fubar and they need to buy a new one themselves.

Saw thread title and came here to post it's the battery, as 99% of threads where the car won't start it turns out to be this. ;)
Which is annoying as it seems so obvious but a bad battery can cause all sorts of issues electrically even if the car does start.

Yeah low battery voltage can make cars throw all sorts of weird errors so you can't really take any codes it generates seriously if you suspect the battery may be weak/failing.

As everyone has said, your battery is kaput, finito, dead as a dodo - you don't need to do any more investigation, you just need to buy a new battery. :D

The fact that your radio and lights are working is irrelevant, they require a lot less battery power. The battery can't supply enough amps to crank your engine fast enough to start it.

Oddly enough I also have an Astra H, and I used to have all sorts of weird random errors. And then I started having starting issues, put a brand new battery in and most of the mysterious gremlins disapeared.
