Hi guys, Im looking to upgrade my system but not sure where to start.

Current spec: 8700k @ 5ghz, 32gb ddr4 ram, gtx 1080ti

I want to be able to play gta 6 at high settings. My current monitor is acer predator ultrawide 1440p monitor. I have budget of 500 plus whatever i get for my parts. What wouls be the best line of upgrades, good gpu now platform upgrade later or lesser gpu now with platform upgrade? What are your suggestions?

I bought a PS3 in anticipation of the GTA 4 release, then it was delayed.
Your current setup is not 'crap' and can play many games at a decent level, however it is now significantly outdated.
If you want to get a new setup as gaming is your hobby, by all means go for it.
Otherwise I'd hold on until GTA6 actually comes out.

I wouldn't buy now, given current DDR5 prices... You could go second hand AM4, as you already have some DDR4, but even then you'd probably get cheaper if you waited closer to release.

GTA6 is currently slated for console release in Nov 2026, based on the last couple, PC release is likely to be 12-15 months after that... I'd wait and hope that things have settled a bit by then

GTA6 isn't going to be out until the end of 2026 at the earliest, and that's assuming there aren't further delays.

With current price hikes for anything with memory attached to it, it's a very poor time to buy. Wait until the game actually comes out, then see where things stand in terms of how the game performs vs what's available on the market hardware wise. That said, £500 wouldn't get you far even before the insane price spikes and we've no idea how GTA6 will run.

If you were desperate to buy something, I'd get a 9070 or 5070.

That would give you around twice the raw grunt and support for ray tracing and DLSS or FSR4. With your CPU, the 9070 is likely to perform better, but I haven't seen any testing on RDNA4 driver overhead, only previous cards.

Your CPU will hold those back, but your budget isn't big enough to do both CPU and GPU at once, especially with the price of RAM.

Problem is, whatever you buy now might be a bad choice for GTA6, since we don't know if it will be GPU or CPU heavy, or if it'll prefer one CPU/GPU brand or the other.

If the release is delayed for many years, the requirements could change significantly.

In 2-3 years time, maybe you could find a great upgrade for everything at half the price of today. Unlikely, but who knows.

With a budget of £500 plus whatever you make from selling your existing components you'd probably be better off buying a PS5 Pro, especially if playing GTA6 is that critical.

But the sensible answer, as many have suggested, is to simply wait. GTA6 won't be coming to PC for at least 2 years and it would be madness to buy PC parts right now ( and for the foreseeable future ) given what's unfolding with the memory shortage / AI boom.

hope it's not like GTA IV, that was terrible port and it took years for working version to come out.

Didn't think much of GTA 5, short game, I got bored. Much preferred GTA III and Vice City.

Wouldn’t buy anything now on the basis of playing GTA, it could still be two years off, who really knows. If you buy anything now specifically for that game it will probably be dated by the time it comes out.

Thanks a lot guys, i just had my current setup for a few years now hence why i thought, Christmas is around the corner so why not treat myself. Gonna wait then and spend money on something else

If GTA6 is released on PC in 2026, I'll pay for your EOL care
This basically. Given the PS5/X release is late 2026 I could see the PC release being November 2027 or perhaps even early 2028. You'd be crazy to buy this far ahead of release with current technology. There will likely be new AM5 CPU's from AMD, the DDR5 price explosion may have eased and there will likely be new gen GPU's from at least one of team red or Team green.

TL;DR: Don't buy now.

I could see the value in a GPU upgrade for you. Even a 9070XT is unlikely to be terrible for GTA VI and will still be viable in the future too.

Would be best to wait and see when GTA will actually be released and how hardware demanding it is. If you really want to play the game when it comes out, and I know it may be a bit controversial here, I would pick up a console and play it on that when it comes out.

That's what I did when GTA 5 came out. Picked up a used Xbox 360 first and then I moved onto PC.

I’d wait. There is a high chance of delay, pc release is relatively unknown and even current hardware available when it finally releases will no doubt not be sufficient for the highest settings with a decent frame rate.

You will likely win the lottery before GTA6 is ever released.

Also, no doubt after all these delays, it will run terrible and big bugged. I didnt play Cyberpunk 2077 on release, so it wouldve been patched and worked properly by the time I got it, but I have a feeling it will go the same way with GTA. There's a reason it keeps getting delayed.

Upgrade if you got the itch, but don't buy for a game that nobody knows when it will be out.
