Hi guys whats your experiance with relatively cheap to insure car that dont break a bank? It is for my daughter whos 17. I have a budget of of up to 6k for car and insurance for the firsf year. I was looking at older quirky cars that no many insure but the lowest inaurance quote was 2k for. It is hard as not every older car is suitable, poor breaks or steering - dont want my daughter to end up in a ditch... what are your recommendations for the first car with insurance for up to 6k? I found 318i e36 convertible which suprisenly was cheap for 3k car and 2.7k insurance. I can do a lot of work on the car if needed.

Audi TT probably a killer on the insurance

Future classic saxo http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202512088455213?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android-app

Scirroco, cheaper to insure than a golf http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202505062101781?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android-app

Sensible choice VW polo http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202512158608895?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android-app

Fiat 500 http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202505232739349?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android-app

THe saxo is cheaper to insure now than it once was now that it's a collector car and no longer a boy racers go to. Though I wouldn't call it safe in an accident.
The others are all cars that a young lady of today would be seen in and are all safe reliable options.

There is a surprising amount of choice on auto trader for this price bracket

Not to appear rude.

But a a Shatso will be rotten and break it's gearbox and blow the engine, and as you say, is a crisp packet in a crash.

I have considered an AUDI with those TFSI 1.8 and 2.0 engines as a daily many times, but whenever I ask any VAG specialist and look into it, all I hear, is that they're are terrible, and the timing gear fails on all of them, it's just a matter of when, amongst many other problems. You have to get a lot newer variant to avoid those issues, but they can still occur. Most VW people will tell you to avoid anything MK5/6 era.
But I suppose it's only got to last a year :)

The FIAT's are reasonable resilient though aren't they?

Brand new EV!

Something like an old Yaris for a first car. Easy to manage and cheap to maintain and insure.

This.

There’s a balance between something that is reasonably reliable that can actually be used ok, and something that teaches them what running a car can actually cost in terms of wear, tear and repairs.

£6K seems like a lot to spend on the first car - maybe £2k max and keep it for a year to see how things go? Definitely shouldn’t be spending more on insurance than the car itself, but then my values were equal when I got my first car at £1250 each

With regards to insurance if she has been learning on your insurance without incident then your insurer may give her a no claims discount. I got an instant 30% off, though that was 40 years ago.

It's only going to be £4kish for the car after insurance which these days is basically the £2k snotters of a couple of years ago

Thanks guys, as weird as it sound she pointed to the Golf Mk1 convertible a few times how 'cute' the car looks. My budget is 6k all in including insurance Just shopping around as some insurances are 2.5k even up to 3k depending on car and always better to hear what are the go to cars as the first one. I still remember my Corsa C 03 plate- 12 years ago now :D

That’s depressing - mind you I bought my first car in 2001 so I’m probably very out of touch!

1992 K reg 1.0 (995cc) Nissan Micro in 2001.

Man I feel old :(

I was told by an insurance salesman that going for a cheap car is not always the best option as they often increase the prices as they think the driver may not be as careful, more a balancing act and may be worth considering something a little nicer. As for which I got mine mate in life but it was a clip and lower than a cheap old fiesta

a used Leaf or Zoe depending on how far she'll need to travel?

If you need an ICE then i'd suggest a Toyota Yaris, easy to drive, extremely reliable, cheap to run and very easy to find parts for.
