Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

I enjoyed it. But is it as good as winning all the awards suggest? No. Glad it has though, as i want to see more turn based RPG's. Hopefully the next Final Fantasy goes back to turn based.

Was relieved I played this on game pass. I lasted about 4 hours. Premise seemed great but I utterly dislike the style of combat and a couple of revisits couldn't get me past that.

They won't, as they have plenty of other turned based RPG's such as Bravely Default. Which is basically Final Fantasy without the name.

Was pretty much killing every boss on my first try until I got to Chromatic Ramasseur last night, what a massive step up in difficulty that was! Got there in the end but took quite a few goes. Amazing tip for anyone struggling - for his power move, the arm he hits you with you has a hand, hit parry the moment you see the hand closing.

Indie Game Awards Disqualifies Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Due To Gen AI Usage

“The Indie Game Awards have a hard stance on the use of gen AI throughout the nomination process and during the ceremony itself,” the statement reads. “When it was submitted for consideration, representatives of Sandfall Interactive agreed that no gen AI was used in the development of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

“In light of Sandfall Interactive confirming the use of gen AI on the day of the Indie Game Awards 2025 premiere, this does disqualify Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 from its nomination.”

wow they lied!

WE DON'T USE AI!

OH wait, we do

They admitted to using it 7 months ago for some textures, mainly placeholder. As far as I'm aware they've all since been removed/replaced.

Not sure if anything new has surfaced?

Regardless, I can't say I care as either way the game is excellent.

It says

"When it was submitted for consideration, representatives of Sandfall Interactive agreed that no gen AI was used in the development of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33."

So when they submitted their game for the awards to be accepted they denied usage of AI

If they did admit it 7 months ago, did Indie Game Awards just ignore it? was it admitted after it was submitted

They admitted to using it during development for placeholder textures, I suppose there's a chance they didn't replace every instance where that was the case without realising or misunderstood the submission requirements?

"During development" seems like an iffy stance really imo, as long as nothing was in the end product I don't see the issue with AI being used, it's a tool like any other.

Quick google brought this up, I remember it being discussed early in the year but not much beyond that:

Absolute nothing burger, just like Arc Raiders using AI voices, oh and didn't KCD2 do that for some as well?
It's just the anti AI hysteria feeding clicks.

At the end of the day, no matter how vocal some people are about how much they hate it. If A I assets were used in a game they wanted to play, I bet you a million pounds they're not going to stand by their convictions and not buy it, gamers are some of the most fickle people on the planet.

I'm actually wondering if this "during development" stance is a case of semantics, it wasn't even used for anything major that I can see in this instance and I wouldn't care if it was.

It honestly comes across as petty, and if it is a no-no for the entire development process as I mentioned it was already well known that they had used it to some extent.

Makes me wonder if this is intentional to be honest, there's a lot of very petty people in these areas and "The Indie Game Awards" is ran by some very "politically" motivated types. There's people winning awards for X or Y that literally nobody has ever heard of and have the track record of a wet fart, Maddy Thorson comes to mind for a "Storyteller Award" after a quick gander at her Wiki page and game dev' history. A bunch of platformers, most of which aren't even on major gaming platforms but live on the likes of itch.io. Indie doesn't mean obscure, like most award setups for any kind of media it's all just a popularity contest for whoever is running the show.

Edit: I don't even personally think E33 is an indie game either, I view it as a small studio little different to some of the likes of Looking Glass or Ion Storm from back in the day, I just think the reasoning/announcement is stupid.

If they're going to ban games for this then they'll probably need to cancel their awards in the next couple of years, as most games will be banned by then.

I don't care if a game uses AI or not I only care about the game being good or not. Trying to fight against the usage of AI swill be a losing battle as AI gets even better and better. The genie is out the bag.

I agree as a player. But I'm sure the people losing their jobs see it differently.

In the music industry they have been debating this. I.e giving AI access to artists backlog and I think they are siding with the artists and not allowing AI access to artists backlog to make music. (Without a license)

Yeah.. It reads like they wanted an excuse not to award E33 more stuff, so had to make up any controversy to do so.
