First car?

Look at the Kia Rio. They tend to be better on insurance and a reliable car in general.

£3.5k, 69k miles and £20 road tax - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202512098468737

The MK3 model (one I linked above) also comes with rear parking sensors (not sure if the lower spec models do too), so this could be helpful for your daughter especially as she gets used to driving.

Hi guys whats your experiance with relatively cheap to insure car that dont break a bank? It is for my daughter whos 17. I have a budget of of up to 6k for car and insurance for the firsf year. I was looking at older quirky cars that no many insure but the lowest inaurance quote was 2k for. It is hard as not every older car is suitable, poor breaks or steering - dont want my daughter to end up in a ditch... what are your recommendations for the first car with insurance for up to 6k? I found 318i e36 convertible which suprisenly was cheap for 3k car and 2.7k insurance. I can do a lot of work on the car if needed.

I bought a Fiat 500c for my 16yo daughter this week.

Make sure you check underneath these because Kia don't seem to bothered about rust protection. Any rust appearing on the subframe, run.

Just get a corsa, plenty of choice, cheap to fix, easy to maintain, easy to fault find. You'll find a decent Corsa D and insurance for the budget you have in mind.

While Bingo is funny - you could do way worse on a first car to be totally honest. A modernish car with great safety and lots of spares available for the odd ding or knock.

17-reg car for £2300 (looks like it was £1999 for a day as well, so reckon you could knock them down) - 10/12 bars on battery.

@SamyBoy13 would be interesting to see an insurance quote - as this is most certainly what my son will end up with later next year (or maybe a Zoe).

18-plate Zoe for £4.5k - with 41kWh pack so good for 160 miles without issue.

There is a reason they are so cheap for an EV.

But surely buying an EV with no warranty and 70% battery health is like buying a petrol car with a knocking engine. It's going to go and it's going to go big time.

Dont get a MK1 Yaris, they do like to rust. Nightmare to maintain at this age. Engines are bulletproof, but underneath they are grrrr. Not worth what people ask for them nowadays. MK2 is a good shout with the 1.33 engine.

Yeah I jest, but there's absolutely no denying that as a basic car to get you around in comfort, safety and for a good price, they're phenomenal. I joke because it got so bad in here at one point that someone would post "I want a manual, naturally aspirated V12 convertible" and someone would recommend a used Leaf.

Go on, indulge me. Can you post up your sources? Research? Even just a basic statistic from a car website? Or is this just another one of your magic-8-ball opinions which is all tosh and zero substance?

stick to something German or Japanese.. Korean; if she doesn't worry about street cred.

Things that will lower her insurance would be to pass the advance driving test, putting her mom or older sister on the insurance or getting a blackbox fitted..

VW Polo/Seat Ibiza would be my first choice... My nephew (24) has recently got rid of his old one and just got a brand new one at the dismay of his GF who hoped to get something more flashy but he didn't want something too big.. while his cousin (21; my neice) is rolling around in a baby blue audi A1 s-line with a private plate

The 1.3 is the better engine. Only 5 speed but that gearbox is also more durable. The 1.33 can be quite a bad oil burner and they didn't fix that until later on with the mk3.
