My course was showing as 'Frost course' on BRS today, so expecting the same tomorrow with how cold it has been

Will be my first time hitting clubs in '26 but won't expect too much if conditions are the same

Winter greens still at our place - have pretty much been that for 3-4 weeks now...

Not hit a ball outside in weeks - no interest in winter greens and wind chill of -5!!

On a positive note - Not made a single bogie yet in 2026

Our course has been closed due to snow the past couple of days :(. I'm guessing more of the same tomorrow given how cold it is, too bad because I wanted to get in a couple more rounds before going back to work on monday.

I can't complain too much though, we managed 9 rounds over the last 2 weeks and I hit my scoring goal for the year :D (broke 100). Next goal is to break 95 by spring!

Frost course, so all temp greens today

We played 9 holes, had 2 snow showers during that time so we went for breakfast to warm up

Forecast isn't looking good for the week so next weekend will likely end up being a range session followed by breakfast again

went to golf clubs for cash on Friday, certainly an impressive amount of stuff to look at. Managed to stop myself buying some wilson staff blades that i'm in no doubt i would be crap with but would look the part at least.
Played in low sun a week back, so hard to play, got one of my worst scores in a while, a little over 100. Just lost balls where i didn't see them leave the club. Long putting was good, short putting was abysmal.

Played my third round of 2026 today, also playing tomorrow and may also do Monday cause why not... :p

Ground was frozen though, still no temp greens for some reason but was just mental, crazy bounces in the fairway, couldn't land on the green but got a lottery if you landed it short, made for some tough conditions but felt I played 'ok', score not great but can blame that on the conditions

Yeah, low sun is a pain, especially as it sounds like you're playing solo? Lost so many balls trying that in the past :p

Played yesterday, like everyone else frozen greens. Monthly medal and net 78 won division one, 76 won division two :p. Cost myself any chance, after an ok front nine, when I racked up double figures at the tenth! NR'd at the last after thinning a wedge through the green and being unable to find my ball.

I didn't think conditions were that bad all things considered so was surprised when checking just now to see a 3 shot PCC adjustment applied. Result of which means my index is now down to 15.9 :D. At what point can you start calling yourself a mid handicap golfer?

After 3 & a half days of antibiotics I'm feeling a bit more alive and energetic, the kids were off school but the wife had a teacher training day so I took the little ones up to the driving range, the course itself was busy but only a couple on the range, kids really enjoying the golf lately and are progressing well.... Should've seen my kids face when we bought a basket of balls and there was a nice Callaway supersoft splatter mixed in :p, I couldn't leave my daughter out though so took her in the club shop and she got a nice green TaylorMade speedsoft ink ball bless her

Isn't 17-ish the average? So you're better than a mid-handicap golfer :p

Out again today, just for a quick 9 holes, ground completely frozen and even a very light smattering of snow on the greens, kinda not sure why they didn't close tbh but hey. Wasn't playing/scoring properly as it's just not worth it in these conditions but had some fun and hit some nice shots. Kinda got my second birdie of the year so far today, but arguably it was a bogey... On the green for 2 on a par 4 but miles away with the snow, didn't bother asking or expecting others to mark their balls and just hit the putt harder to account for the snow, was missing well right but hit another ball and ricochet into the hole, so is that a 3 or do I add 2 penalty strokes, or just not care either way

On Saturday my knackered old stand bag finally died so now need to get a new one and struggling to find one that ticks all the boxes really. I want light-ish but willing to sacrifice that to an extent for durability and maybe waterproofing/resistance, I want the straps to be easily removable for when I do use a trolley/buggy, I want a full size apparal pocket so I can keep a jacket/hat/bulky-ish stuff like that, and finally I want a stand like the Ping Hoofer (not sure how to describe it but where the base is split to trigger the legs rather than an external lever which makes trollers/buggies awkward). Doesn't seem too much to ask but had a scan around my local golf shop and couldn't see anything that ticked all the boxes... Any thoughts?

I have been considering consolidating my 2 bags (carry bag for winter and trolley bag for summer) into a single bag and have been looking at the Callaway Fairway 14 range - there is a waterproof version as well as the non-waterproof one

It has removable straps and what Callaway call their low-rider leg system that has the legs set lower than a normal bag so that it sits on a trolley without the legs interfering with anything

I did see them on my website searching and they do look good, would like to see/play with one in the flesh and none in my local golf shop which is a bit of a pain, might need to take a trip to an AG or something... Also the Fairway C HD which I don't like the colour/pattern of that much but seems similar but without the leg system and just a way divider. Not sure if I've got a preference on 4/5/6-way or 14-way divider tbh... Got a Ping Pioneer which is a 15-way cart bag which I like. Oh, do definitely want full length dividers whatever it is...

I'm half tempted to pick up whatever the cheapest carry bag I can find just to have <something> whilst I search/be overly picky for 'the right bag', but then I'll just stick with the cheap temp replacement :p

Decided to not play golf today, first day of 2026 and an end to a 9 day streak, probably should've played just to make it 10 days in a row

I did however spend some time down the range, 'only' 40 balls but I find that's a nice number to work through some small tweaks/drills without getting bored so then I'm more likely to go do some chipping/putting practice as well, which I also did today. Overall went fine but a bit of a highlight in that when I was hitting driver my smooth swing speed now seems a tiny bit faster at 96-97mph (previously maybe 94-95 ish) and then when trying to up the speed with a whopping 3 attempts I managed 99, 99 and 101! That's the first time I've seen 100+ on a launch monitor \o/ Meaningless really, and still slooooooow, but hey, it's something :p

So 2026 Goals.....

Some lofty ones here but aim high!!!
  • Beat 2025's 75 birdies..... So anything over 75 birdies total for the year.
  • 3 rounds with no doubles - I set 5 last year but only managed 2.... 3 is more do-able.
  • Shoot 75 or better on my home course (scratch) - best I've ever shot is 76 (+5) - I should be able to shoot 75 or less.
  • 5 new golf courses - going to try spread my wings a bit more.
  • More during the week golf. I have time, i work for myself - I should be out playing more golf.
General things for next year - process/pre shot routine - this is a big one... Going to work hard on this.
Also practice a bit more - whether that's chipping / putting etc - just carve out some time to work on the basics.

I'm not setting a handicap goal - that will come from the stuff above but hopefully lower than 5.8 starting point - anything under this will be lowest I've ever got too.

I am only going to have a couple of goals this year

First one could be difficult to hit as I want to try and set a new PB - Currently that sits at +1(73) at my home course, so I will have to shoot level par to hit that target

Main goal is to try and finish the year with my lowest handicap. Briefly got down to 5.0 but currently sitting at 6.6 due to a year of struggling off the tee. Working on my tee game over the winter so hopefully that will help

Lowest man at the end of the year for a sleeve of balls? Prov's? (handicap at 31st Dec)

First birdie of the year today in the midweek roll up, medal off the whites. 6i off the winter mat on the last of the par three's to 7ft :) One of few highlights today as I struggled to find my swing all round.

Came in with a nett 75 playing off sixteen. No one in the field managed nett par or better so will see what the score differential is tomorrow on England golf. It may be good enough to shave a little more off my index.
