Today’s ep (5) is wildly different in tone than the others… narrated, 4th wall breaking and very much aimed at a younger audience, weirdly similar to a 90s show like ‘Clarissa Explains It All’.
Yeah… it’s pretty jarring at first. If you didn’t like the earlier eps you really won’t like this! Absolutely nothing like ‘classic trek’.
I’ve quite enjoyed the overall light tone of the show so after an adjustment I still liked it. The lead - Sam - while still a total dweeb is less grating than her briefer appearances in earlier eps., through a bit of adjustment / time, so that redeems her in my eyes.
Plot is a bit of a nostalgia grab by referring back to DS9 related matters, with Sam doing a library project to maybe solve a mystery. The bar / dinner scenes are pretty fun, so gets better after that jarring start.
I think all the main characters had their own episodes (or shared eps) now, so presume it will now start weaving in more plot points or an overall theme / story that will carry over to the end of the season, assuming also that the staff are going to be mostly reserved to ‘B plots’.
