Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month

I'm not a fan of this but can see why it's global - more and more countries around the world are imposing various regulations, so companies either have to employ multiple teams to maintain and make sure they don't fall foul of any regulation, or simply lock down the whole platform to meet all of them.
One costs more than the other, so unless it's going to impact profits in a region it's a no-brainer.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it becomes required for all aspects, or even all online platforms, regardless of content. (You've already got certain people in the US suggesting they should retire section 230, meaning the platforms themselves would be liable for any content posted on them)

Anyway... until then, here's what's changing:

Default Safety Settings

Starting in early March, all new and existing Discord users globally will be assigned new default settings that support age-appropriate experiences while keeping privacy front and center:

  • Content Filters: Discord users will need to be age-assured as adults in order to unblur sensitive content or turn off the setting.
  • Age-gated Spaces – Only users who are age-assured as adults will be able to access age-restricted channels, servers, and app commands.
  • Message Request Inbox: Direct messages from people a user may not know are routed to a separate inbox by default, and access to modify this setting is limited to age-assured adult users.
  • Friend Request Alerts: People will receive warning prompts for friend requests from users they may not know.
  • Stage Restrictions: Only age-assured adults may speak on stage in servers.
Last year, Discord successfully launched a teen-by-default experience in the UK and Australia, and this global rollout builds on that approach to deliver consistent, age-appropriate protections worldwide.

So seemingly we've already had these changes here for a while now.

Already verified mine a while ago, doesn't bother me to be honest. Didn't need my ID, face was enough.
Yeah, if the face scans never leave my device (which is what they've said, not sure how much I trust that), I'm not overly bothered.
Sucks for the people who look young enough that AI won't give them the all clear though!

All this age verification ******** is really beginning to grate now. Half the time, when you do cave and decide to do the verification, all the methods they choose to verify fail.

Even better - I did age verification to sign up for an xbox dev account in case I want to use it as an emulation box, yet I'm still being nagged by MS to verify my age.

For the forum when? The pron subforum had gotta be pretty problematic.

Hey Kier, if you see this...

SMD!!!

Come at me brah..
Lol calling him a surface mount device is a low blow, not all will get that joke :D

Was it Vent or Teamspeak where you type "soisoisoi" into the chat to voice feature and it makes helicopter sounds?
