Ryzen 7 5700X3D in 2026?

Running a Ryzen 7 5700X3D on a B550 motherboard with 32GB DDR4.

I'm guessing that unless I pair it with a very high end (and very expensive!) GPU, even in many of the most recent games I'm unlikely to be CPU limited?

In this case would it be a reasonable plan to skip upgrading to AM5 - especially with current RAM prices - and wait for AM6 (or whatever comes next)?

Thanks in advance for replies.

Depends if you want to save cash or have the best. Doesn't really matter if your playing games at the settings you want.

just go and watch a few benchmark videos that compare the 2 CPUs.

the higher the resolution you are playing at the less it matters.
a lot of benchmarks are run at 1080p to show the difference in CPU, but for me those benchmarks are pointless because I don't game at 1080

Not sure if it'll help but I'm running 5900x and 6900xt at 4k with zero issues.

Wife is still running her 3600 which will be upgraded next month to the 5700x, which makes more sense than the 5800x given the small performance margins.

She's playing at 4k on her 2070 super and bar loading screens being a bit slow, is fine. I don't think you'll have an issue personally.

A lot of people are looking at upgrading to 5700 / 5800 X3Ds under the current circumstances around RAM pricing.

I'm in that boat as well, on a 3700X that I'd happily upgrade to 5700X3D if I could find one for around £100. But the prices are way, way higher than that right now due to the above.

I'm still happily playing games at 4K. Obviously not at top end settings, but as you say I think it's the GPU that will hold me back there anyway.

The higher the resolution the less likely you are to be cpu bound. As an example. Currently playing dying light the beast even at 3840x1600 I’m still GPU bound on a 9700xt. The best way of finding out would be to do GPU utilisation on a game with no frame capping . If you are under 90 - 95% I would say you are CPU bound.

As others have said, at very high resoolutions and graphics settings, you'll tend to be more GPU limited, but at lower resolutions or settings the CPU can become a limiting factor.

Some newer games are heavily CPU bound, e.g. Space Marine 2, which can mean that especially at lower resolutions, even very high end GPUs will be framerate limited by the CPU.

In short, it will depend on a number of factors, but the 5700X3D is still a great gaming CPU, just not the best.

Thanks for replies.

Pretty much confirms what I was thinking. I'm only going to be pairing the 5700X3D with a mid-range GPU (looking to get an Intel Arc B580) so I shouldn't be CPU limited at 1440p.

So no pressure to upgrade to AM5 anytime soon.

B580 is about the same level as my 6700XT, and at 1440p I’m almost always GPU limited.

I have a 5080 and 5700x3d, I play at 4k and have never been close to being CPU bound so I think it’s still a fantastic option.

Thanks, good to know.

Highly unlikely though that my budget can stretch to anything like a 5080, sadly.

I had a 5700X3D with a 4090 and now have a 9800X3D, there was 10% here and there and the system feels a bit snappier but realistically you’ll get more out of a upping the GPU even by a tier.

Definitely skip IMO. I'm on a 5800X and I'd happily switch to a 5700X3D if AMD produced another run of them.
No idea if this is likely to happen, but I'm genuinely shocked by the prices second hand 5700X3D and 5800X3D chips are going for right now. £300+ is not uncommon.

I guess the demand for them massively outstrips availability.

Think I paid £180 for my 5700X3D brand new 18 months ago.

Unless you absolutely have to buy new would a used 3080 10gb be a option?
I’ve passed my 3080 down to one of the kids for their B550/5700X rig and it’s still a very capable card.
Price wise a used 3080 is similar to the new B580.

In terms of skipping a gen I’m doing that, have X570/5900X and it barely moved with the 3080 and is similar with a 9070XT at 1440p.

Got my other kid a full setup from scratch using both new and a couple of used parts for less than a gen5 cpu and 32GB DDR5 ram would have cost me in upgrading mine now.

I'm still using the 5800X3D with my RTX4080 and it's fine in most cases, I do find occasional issues in very CPU heavy games, but I'm not sure if an upgrade would help much in those cases, it's usually poorly optimized UE5 games

Still boggles the mind that games like Assassins Creed could have hundreds of NPCS on screen and function just fine with a comparatively ancient CPU's, but modern CPU's struggle with dozen or so. The level of optimization in modern games is shocking tbh,

I got mine for £120 on import which even at the time seemed like a bargain but now it looks like an great investment, wish I’d bought 10 but hindsight is a great thing.

Oh wow I hadn't realised that chip prices were also going crazy...
