Suzuki Jimny

We ended up going for the Renegade - the 4x4 Willys.

Nice drive - really spacious, comfortable interior which the Jimny lacks and no import duties as they're made here so picked up a 2021 model for a very good price.

Bit masculine for you innit?

We rented one in Crete. It was... adequate. Nothing special, just a textbook version of "an car". The lane keep assist was irritating as **** though.

All serious off-road based stuff is pretty hard to live with on road. I really don’t understand why people buy them as a main car. It’s the same with pick up trucks, absolutely terrible cars unless you need to carry pallets or something.

As someone who has spent a lot of time driving pickups that depends a lot on the pickup - there is a big split between the workhorses and lifestyle pickups, even with that being a bit more blurred with recent models. There are some I absolutely wouldn't want to spend any more time in than I had to outside of actually using them for work and others which are really not bad to live with.

I bought a brand new VW Amarok 180 Highline back in 2014 and that was very cilvilised.

About the only thing I'd fault the Amarok for is the relatively heavy steering - though sometimes I'd take the more direct feel over the lighter but sometimes a bit vague steering on my Navara - but overall the steering on my D40 is surprisingly agile and always surprises people who've driven it expecting it to be much worse coming from a car. I'm on and off between replacing my D40 with a Amarok or trying to find a relatively low miles 2021 Navara at the moment as I have a bunch of Navara accessories and spare wheels for the D23 :( but I'd much rather have another V6.

Serious off road stuff?

It's a Fiat 500x in a frock. It'll struggle with a decent pothole, never mind "serious off road".

What is a Fiat 500 in frock? A Jimny?

If you think a Jimny is a Fiat 500 in a frock, you wouldn’t know a serious off roader if it run you over :p

I suppose it depends what you’re comparing it against. Civilised compared to a Lada Niva, or Caterham 7 sure. Compared to a Ford Mondeo, well not so much.

Indeed. Personally, the comparison was against various hatches, saloons and SUV's I've owned throughout.

Edit: @jigger - What do you drive?

A serious off-roader sure but any of the lifestyle spec pickups like the Amarok are reasonably civilised relative to a regular car - a little less practical but not hideously so - while not my main car I daily drove my D40 Navara Outlaw for around 6 years and even with the rear leaf springs and on Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tyres it was mild mannered on the road, sat planted and comfortable on any decent road. Combined with a torquey and relatively refined V6, a decent auto transmission, great seats and an upgraded sound system it was a nice place to be while never outclassed off-road either (unless it came to doing some serious wading - but that is another story).

I wouldn't want to drive one without the parking cameras and with manual transmission though as otherwise they can be a bit of effort.
