Obsession

I wanted to go watch it, but my local indie cinema isn't showing this film for some reason.

Only other option for watching at the cinema is to go to the Cineworld near me, which I don't really want to do.

I emailed my local indie cinema earlier and they responded:

We do not currently have any plans to show Obsession I'm afraid, as we just don't have enough space at the moment due to the current films on release. I will pass on your suggestion to our programmers for the future.

That's a shame.

That's a shame.
For a small cinema that’s insane. This is getting loads of hype and rightly so. What are they playing instead? Me and my friends I watched it with thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m not a horror fan, it’s terrifying and has some real “wtf” moments. It’s a great watch, especially in a cinema. Totally freaks you out, I’d definitely recommend it.

Michael, The Christophers, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, The Sheep Detectives and The Devil Wears Prada 2.

It does sound like they're missing out by not showing it, but they don't have enough screens.

Surely they’ve misunderstood their place in the market as a small independent cinema. Obsession is not exactly a budget release (it’s a Focus Features / Universal release) but indie cinemas should make sure they aren’t just playing the same big releases as the multiplexes otherwise there’s no point in them existing

Shame, but good on you for asking them about it.

I have a cineworld pass and I was going to see the Mandalorian film this week. I think I will go see this instead.

EDIT : No I won't. Only two screenings later in the evening and they don't work for me. I guess I will be going to see one of the 10 Mando screenings instead. :(

Watched it at the weekend in my local Odeon Luxe. All evening showings were almost fully sold out which was good to see, although there were a lot of younger adults in the cinema talking and laughing which ruined it slightly (will probably be the last horror I go to the cinema to watch).

I really enjoyed the film itself though.

Yeah it was the same in our showing too. People getting over exciting and ruining the experience for others.

My thoughts from the daily film thread:

A truly excellent modern horror. Relatable, tragic, funny in twisted way and then unexpectedly deeply unsettling, with an absolutely masterful and restrained use of uncanny visuals and audio.

The film avoids heavy explanation which may frustrate those that preferred everything wrapped up neat, but this avoids spoiling some mystery. It did also end a little soon; the concept had plenty of mileage for a more dramatic outro IMO. Still, very impactful and well worth seeing at the cinema.

9/10

Those unexpected jerky movements, yikes!! I did spot them quite early on but it was very subtle… then very not subtle when she slinked out into the doorway *shudder*

I like that it’s a deliberate spin on male obsessiveness, and that even though he was thought of as a ‘good guy’… he clearly wasn’t as he was happy to roll with such awfulness.

Re: the audience, this was mixed for me. People were talking and that was very annoying, but the film was often very funny. I often moan on here at modern horrors leaning into comedy, but that tends to be when something ‘scary’ suddenly becomes ‘silly’ (Weapons, Together, etc.). However, this was the other way around. It was ‘silly’ and then ‘scary’. The vibe I got was that many people laughed along, but then got subverted into genuine frights.

So in a way, the communal mirth made some of the horror a little more jarring.

One other thought:

The girl in the car dying was very anticipated… but the extent of the violence less so!

I was going to watch Backrooms tomorrow at the Everyman but on reading your review I swapped it to this one and will do Backrooms with my Odeon tickets at the w/e

I think the Backrooms film has a lot of YouTube content predating it, but which I’m pretty sure won’t be ‘necessary’ but it could be worth looking into!
