EV general discussion

Not evolution, literally what Tesla did with the Model S. The Lucid Air and of course J1 platform for the Taycan.... which WASNT used for the PPE (Macan, A6) cars as its an expensive way to make cars.

Its a mechanism to make the smaller cars (likely RWD) rather than the same size cars with a complicated battery and foot garage. Thats the opening gambitt, rest is PR fluff.

Volvo doesnt make me think of a low slung saloon anyway. Soccer MUM SUVs, Luther and his Volvo, a 850 estate BTTC car or a 340 with a welded rear diff!

Indeed, we are trying to go smaller as our XC60 is too much of a big monster but look at that and go ooooh :D they've kept its design clean and simple and I prefer our Volvos software to nearly everything else I have tried, it is not intrusive at all though apparently that is year dependant based on what is mandatory that week and newer ones might be worse.

I also like the Polestar 5.....I must stop liking big tanks I don't need. :D

Is this the thing that makes them a write off after any crash as well because the chassis can't be replaced piecemeal anymore?

I'm still totally down tbh, I'm going to miss my estate when that goes

FSD subscription £99/month for Tesla instead of £6800.

Not a bad price but considering you don’t even get FSD in the UK yet, you’re essentially paying for the Enhanced Auto Pilot features. Those with EAP already will pay £49/month for FSD.

Tried some of the features out, they’re ok, but a little gimmicky. I’m sure many can live without them.

Might be good assuming you can just subscribe for one month at a time, I have 3500+ miles planned over 3 weeks in summer, so had FSD been available in the UK this year, I might have stumped up for that one month..

There doesn’t seem to be a minimum contract term. You can purchase then cancel, and it’ll keep the features on until the cancellation date.

Recently changed our BMW F11 535D over to a hybrid. We had the car from 75K until 140K and it has been excellent but needed an SUV as we've a baby on the way. I'd say 90% of our driving is now under 20 miles round trip and the BMW just wasn't the right choice any more. It was epic on long trips but awful on short trips which will surprise no-one.

We've changed to a Mazda CX60 Takumi PHEV, we love it. The build quality is surprisingly very good and the electric motor about town is perfect for our needs. It's not got the low down pull the BMW had but it's enough and when ICE & EV are working it does get a shift on. I reckon we will save about £200 a month in diesel costs.

Getting the hang of plugging it in based on how we think it's going to be driven but getting a Zappi fitted tomorrow so we can enjoy the EV charging rates.

Which used EV would you guys buy for around £10K? Not a Leaf as I currently own one and it has been the most unreliable car I have ever owned.

I managed to pick up a Peugeot 2008 EV for just under 10k, 3 years old and 13K miles, it's been brillliant. It was a EX disablity car so had all the servicing done from peugeot every year.

Possibly made a big error yesterday and ordered an Abarth 600e Competizione :D

I’ve been sharing cars with family now my daughter is driving and needed something for myself, can’t make my mind up so was just going to buy a used Kona or Niro to pootle about in, perfect really for the bit of city driving I do but 10-15k on a car I don’t really like.

Then I saw the lease deal ~ £5.5k for 2yrs, almost disposable at that price thought why not. Ok a bit cheap inside considering the cost of the car but I don’t mind at this price. :D

Super short range not really a problem for me, our XC60 T8 35-40 mile battery suits me daily with charge left over.

I’m going to be an EV owner … Gulp

If I don’t get on with it I could buy something else and it can just sit on the drive :D

No you haven't, it'll be great, I've ordered one too :D

I've ordered a Tourismo, first ev for me too, this is going to be a long three month wait.

What are your requirements?

Edit: 1st gen ID.3’s are dipping under £9k now on a 2020 plate if you are after another hatch.

My much loved Skoda Yeti is over 10 years and 108k miles old and thoughts are turning to an EV replacement. However, I'm after a small SUV with reasonable ground clearance, AWD and V2L. The shortlist is very short!
The Renault 4 looks good - but no AWD version (yet?)
The Suzuki e Vitara might work - but no V2L
The Volvo EX30 Cross Country might be perfect but no V2L

What else? The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has the AWD and V2L, but only 160mm ground clearance, MG4 XPOWER even lower. The MGS5 is only RWD.

Which leaves just the Smart #1 BRABUS, AWD, 182mm clearance and V2L (same as the EX30 underneath?). Anyone here got one?

Went with the Renault 4 in the end, arrived this week. So far so good.
