Ferrari Luce EV

At least it hasn't got horrible 'logo' tail lights.

I literally gasped out loud as a 26 plate Merc braked in front of me the other day, to show those tacky star logo things. What happened to car design?! :(

Out the window. Even the new Mini looks like a Chinese copy of a Mini. The 4 door version looks like a cut-and-shut job.

A lot of modern cars, especially the Chinese ones seem to have ugly lines when viewed from the rear sides. The skinny eco wheels on EVs compound that. Maybe that's the hardest angle to get right and the talent just isn't there.

Jesus you really have a bee in your bonnet about blaming everything on EV ;)

Does have a point on EVs though. My colleague has an EV 4 series, and I can’t put my finger on it, but it just looks ‘chunky’ compared to the ICE version. Same with Mini EVs, and other brands, they just look fatter.

Must just be your eyes.

How big was the bet that this journo lost

You can almost hear him stop gargling the frank & beans at the end of the vid.

I am not suggesting there are not some "interesting" design choices from the likes of Jaguar and Ferrari etc.

I am just saying it is a weak argument suggesting that it is because you can't make sexy low slung EV hyper cars.
just look at the Yang Wang U9.

if they can make that look like that then I refuse to believe that with a bit of Pininfarina type magic that Ferrari could not come up with a traditional Ferrari looking cars.
whether you like the Luce or not is irrelevant. my point is, it's not "ugly" because it's an EV.

To be fair his point does stand. EVs are architecturally different to ICE cars. They tend to be a bit thicker at the bottom to accommodate the battery pack, and they also never require a transmission tunnel, and they also don't need bit chunky front ends to accommodate engines, so they do dictate the shape of the car to an extent.

You can generally recognise an EV from a mile off due to these proportions, and their need to be as slippery as possible to eke every additional mile out of a charge.

What interests me even more is that when they started going mainstream, a lot of OEMs felt the need to make it very obvious that their cars were EVs. Look at the likes of BMW's iX range and the Mercedes EQ range. There was no mistaking them. Granted you had the likes of the e-golf which were generally very compromised in order to accommodate an electric drivetrain, but I don't consider that a true EV.

This isn't ugly because it's an EV, but there's no doubting that it added a lot of restrictions for the design team.

I'd ask them why they needed to put a stupid 122kWh battery in it, when most of their cars do well under 20MPG in the real world, and that makes them a 250 mile range vehicle. It would be interesting to see how long in distance the average driving a Ferrari does per trip across the globe.

Why not make an actual car, not CUV, with a much smaller battery that is lighter, more aero dynamic as not as tall, and probably would do more than enough range for the normal user.

Doesn't take 2 hours to fill a petrol tank though.

It needs a big battery with 1000+hp. It has to store it's energy rather than generate it.

I love that tablet on a ball joint lol. Don't you get those in tractors?

What’s that telling us? Anyone with working eyes can see the extra sill volume on a 4 series gran coupe compared to the i4 trying to mask the batteries.

8C cells would be the answer if they even entertained such a daft question.

Cos that’s battery chemistry and engineering need. Not some random dude going to the shops as a benchmark.

Skinny eco tyres? I must have the wrong type on my car then as they are as wide as I have had on previous ICE cars.
