lol, I literally just checked my long term trip meter for my Cupra Born. It is at 28mph average over 9600ish miles. And I do plenty of motorway trips, but most of them are in normal traffic.

It’s almost like different people have different priorities on what makes a good EV.

Same in the eBike thread, people wanting a legal motor to be 20mph when my average speed was 10.8mph

Joining club EV Next week...

After the saga with my Santa Fe now being sorted, I decided that realistically we no longer needed 7 seats so, having always wanted an estate (and still needing room to get a few of us about and move things occasionally...) I take delivery of the Audi A6 E-Tron Avant Black Edition on Tuesday, only had the 83kwh Option available but, will be more than fine for what I use it for!

Different demographic though no matter how similar they might be under the skin. My mother-in-law is on her 5th Polo in a row and would most likely go Polo again when they feel the need to go EV. Zero chance she would go out and buy a Cupra Raval.

We had a look at the Raval a couple of weeks ago, it feels particularly cheap build quality wise, screens are nice and updated compared to the Tavascan but just felt a bit cheap. Thats why we ended up with the JCW Mini as that feels a lot more well built.

Having driven a few EV’s now I decided to take a Hyundai 5N out as it’s had a lot of praise.

Needless to say this is the first EV I’d be willing to buy, feel Hyundai have truly nailed the software and fake gearbox / engine simulation absolutely spot on.

Those who buy a car as a fun car and truly enjoy driving the 5N is the best Performance EV I’ve driven, note I say performance as you could argue a Honda Super N is also great fun in a less powerful smaller package.

Hyundai engineers have setup the paddles and the 8 speed simulated gearbox perfectly, full throttle upshifts jolt (torque interruption) and downshifts pop and gurgle. The car is also quite a bit slower in manual mode as well meaning you can somewhat enjoy the performance more as feels more like a 400HP car and is generally an engaging and enjoyable experience to use the paddles and have the sound track in ignition mode.

Hit the N shift button again and the paddles become regen and gears (simulated) no longer exist but now sounds like your driving on the motorway in second gear so best to turn sound off. In this mode the car has far more instant power and a lot more of it and feels the 600HP for sure. Pressing boost button gives you an additional 40HP for 10s.

In short fun B road or relaxed motorway driving the simulated gear mode is fantastic and if your having fun at traffic lights then go back to Auto whilst in N mode for maximum performance and acceleration.

Styling is a bit too much SUV for my liking but it’s very well equipped and rides ok with 4 suspension settings and you can configure it like crazy. Some surfaces and bumps show up the excessive two tonne plus weight but it’s not bad.

Shall drive a 6N next as I do prefer looks as a fun car for myself not sure I could buy one though as though amazing it is and very fast it’s missing something still but if the Mrs ever sells the Honda E I’ll buy her one of these as the replacement, more space, more range and something that’s truly fun whilst been a triple AAA.

Also looking forward to trying new M3 and Denza Supercar though feel the 5N and 6N at 65k asking is a lot of car for money but they do crash in value hard and as they have a 5/8yr warranty feel a 3yr old ish one at 30-40k is a great buy.

It was just an example, as he mentioned the Renault 5 which from a looks point-of-view is way more boy racer than the Polo.

I could have linked many other less/more-offensive cars that are £30-32k or under as well, pre-reg, but in different classes e.g Kia EV4 GT-Line, or a BYD Seal Design, or a Polestar 2 LR Single Motor, or a Skoda Elroq, and many, many more - you get the idea. a £32k Polo is crap regardless if you bought 27 of them previously.

Well got a delivery date of October for Kona N Line which I'm intending to smash the miles on for commuting. I would rather have got the R5 but trying to get the mrs on board with this as well and she liked this car more.

Nice write up, but knowing your other cars is an EV really for you? At least not yet anyway, it'll be a while before EVs are in any way comparable.

Regarding the 5N, I'd have to get the Tippex out as whenever I see one I can't help but see Queen Padmé Amidala staring back blankly.

Back to the Ravel, I found these stats from a production car review in Germany, they look pretty good, up there with the Model 3 at 4.4miles/kwh?

If you might get another 0.1 miles with 18" wheels

(I'm looking at the ID Polo if a good lease deal appears)

Plus you have the Elroq, EV2 and Ioniq3, its good to have all this competition in the small car space.

It amazing how the Polo only has one free colour option and it is yellow, not even a nice yellow like the R5. Cheapest 52kWh build seems to be over £28k, not sure what that would be in an actual dealer though.

Yes, metallic yellow is a strange choice.

Other forums are reporting around 10% discount available on the Ravel, have to wait a few weeks to see if that is achievable with the Polo
