Dubai currently has 15% of the worlds tower cranes and is the fastest growing city in the world.

Look at some of the developments currently going on.

Each island can be purchased.

This tower will be the worlds tallest in comparision to everything before it

Some of the developments are truely eye candy to the world.

That is probably a great investment. People will flock there to rent their own island and have a few weeks off in the sun and as far as I know there isnt much violence there towards westerners.

Am I the only one who thinks that looks extremely tacky?

"tacky" from a certain perspective yes

but I'm more inclined to admire the sheer audacity of this development, it's fun and innovative IMO :)

Those islands are tiny....and they are so close together..if i buy an island i wanna be able to walk round naked without 10 neighbouring islands being able to see my coconuts.

Dubai, if it gets finished, will be an impressive feat of engineering...Its incredibly tacky though....and it really has no content..Its a nice beach resort but people arent really gonna wanna live there.

Currently theres only actually about 3 dubai citizens...the rest of the population is made up of indian and south east asian slave workers. :o

Sunbathing? In Dubai?

Theres a reason arabs cover themselves from head to toe mate... :o
You will burn to a crisp faster than if you jumped into a man sized microwave.

Those with Google Earth or Ms Live Local .

The satellite views of the region are truely stunning.

Does Dubai have any sort of offshore drift of sediment? That'll make a right mess of those nicely sculpted islands in a few years if it does, and could cause ecological problems downstream.

In short...I don't like it.

the surrounding circlular breakwater will deal with that....they have problems with sediment deposit and movement on the palm island things...which they plan to solve by moving the deposits back to where they came from every few years :o

I saw a documentary about the planning and construction of the first larger palm tree. An incredible feat of engineering for something that looks relatively simple.

The reason for the massive development is to counter the fall in revenue from their rapidly diminishing oil stocks, by concentrating on tourism.

I was over there for a few days earlier this year. The size and scale of construction is truly mindblowing, however this does mean that at the moment a lot of it resembles a giant construction site - particularly the new areas where the Burj Dubai tower is being built. Imagine about 50 Canary Wharf developments being built all at the same time around the main tower and it will give you some idea of the scale of it all.

Also being finished this year is the new Sunny Mountain snow dome...

http://www.skidubai.com/SkiDubai/Dubai_sunny_mountain_ski_dome/default.asp

The project consists of a dome - a steel structure - that will include a huge revolving ski slope, going through and around an artificial mountain range - created to emphasize the "Arctic Experience" effect. Two huge real-ice columns will mark the entrance to the dome. Within the dome, there will be all kind of Arctic experiences, ranging from Penguinarium, winter aquaria, snow castle, ice-rink, Arctic animals statues, 4-season aquaria, snowfall, sound and light effects, cold and warm bath spa and other facilities, an ice-bridge, a cable-lift, snow maze, ice-slide, polar bears, are some of the features that will be integrated into the development and attractions. It will also have a deluxe hotel, a shopping mall, restaurants, coffee shops and other retail outlets.
