Alternatives to a 200 Vi for £1500?

You cant compare cars like this! I keep up with faster things in my rubbish leon purely because i drive like more of a nutcase, it doesnt make my car any better though.

The E36 325i SE is by far the better car, there is no denying this. What is being disputed are the running costs, which may or may not be a problem for someone looking at £1500 cars to start with. I can accept that maybe the running costs are a reason not to bother, and i accept that for £1500 you are looking at a miley old one, but im not gonna sit here and read someone post that a mondeo ST24 is anything like as good to drive :p

I never said the mondeo would handle better I know that with the right driver in the bmw i wouldn't stand a chance. Maybe you should try driving one they aren't that bad you know :D :p

My 2.0 Mondeo Estate is faster than a 325i Estate.

I raced one in a straight line the other day.

Perhaps the BMW was an auto?

They didnt even do an E36 325i estate? It must have been a diesel.

The 328i estate with the same power figures manages 60 in 7.1 seconds according to a lot of places, the auto taking 7.6 ish.

Not a 90k skoda thats for sure.

You can get an SVX for £1500.
Better than anything else mentioned so far here, you couldnt insure it though.

What's an SVX?

I thought the vRS had a good reputation on here?

It was defo an estate and it defo said 325i on the back, there wasn't a D or anything though.

I never said it was an E36, it's the oldest shape 3 series there is, dunno what code that is.

Not really sure how this fits your budget or insurance specification in your opening post, however, it's a heck of a lot of car for £8k!

It doesnt... :o

I sat down and thought about what I was doing, and what I wanted, and having seen some dogs in Rover 200 Vi form, decided that as I had budgeted for the new Rover to be paid for inside a year, (with the possibility of it dying again) that it wasn't a lot different in terms of monthly outgoings to lose £1500 a year on depreciation, which opened up more doors.

I've always liked the vRS for being understated, good-looking (imo) and great value for money, and those two factors combined with a growing dislike for no air con induced sweaty bits in the Rover, meant insurance was the only extra hurdle to overcome. I've changed jobs since renewing my insurance premium, and found that by lowering my mileage estimation to a more realistic 20,000 w/ 10,000 business miles and increasing the excess reduced the best quote by over £500. That meant that the first year of vRS ownership is likely to cost me an extra £50 a month in insurance, with less reliability worries.

Maybe it's a perspective thing, but if someone said to me they were looking at alternatives for a top of the range sporty small hatch, and had considered the top of the range sporty Primera, if I were to be thinking of Mondeos, I'd be thinking more RSAP bodykit than fake wood..

And if I had a budget of just £1500 for a performance variant, one with RSAP would be at the back of my mind becuase they are hard to come by at £1500 - and of course most £1500 ST24's are saloons which have no bodykit, look identical to a Ghia X, yet have less kit :)
