I heard this report on radio 4 this morning. A survey was carried out by the world service asking "is it ok to torture people to save lives?"

59% of the people interviewed, (i think it was about 25k people from a wide spectrum of countries) said "no!"

What do you think?

Im not 100% sure what my stance is on it and im curious what you chaps think?

Against torture here, unless they enjoy it of course ;)

Total violation of ANYONES human rights, I know that obviously no one has the right to kill others and that they might deserve to be tortured.

But two wrongs does not make a right.

There somebody who works in another department I would be quite happy about if they were tortured..... not for information but for my pleasure.

Depends on who it is I guess. If you are tortuning someone to tell you where a bomb is that is about to be blown on a plane, then I can see reasons why that would be acceptable.

Just depends on the circumstances.

Depends on who it is and what they'd done... Huntley, Hindley, Shipman all them should have it

I think it is barbaric to push another human to the extremes of pain and suffering and I'm yet to hear a solid argument that would sway me into thinking it can be justified.

How good are truth drugs these day?

Issues like that really cant be pigeonholed into Right/Wrong.

My stance is that it's wrong to make anybody torture someone else, no matter who they are. Nobody on the planet should have to hurt or kill another person (and yes, I am therefore against capital punishment).

But if a person who had committed such acts had information that could save many lives, and would only admit under torture... well I'd have to do some fast soul-searching.

Tough one.

It has been going on for years; it's just that we tend not to hear/see much about it so it becomes a matter of out of sight, out of mind.

We pretend to be civilised but in reality, we are no better than some of the countries that we would condemn for their human rights record.

The usual agrgument is "well they know where a bomb is planted that is about to go off"

But really is this a likely situation, how many times in history have bombs been planted then terrorists been arrested before they explode?

I guess a terrorist could know about a future plot to do something but I would need some examples where torture has saved lives.

So you don't think that it's acceptable to torture one person, if it saves, say, 1000?

No I didn't say that, if you can explain the circumstances of how it would come about in real life then I may agree.

If there was a bomb on a plane, I think clever interogation is better than to torture as in every case.

Yes. Torture is gonna bang in your face.

Sorry, went a bit Westwood there, but you get the point :D

I don't believe it's ever right to torture people and I definately wouldn't want to know that any British authority is doing it to 'protect me'.
There are certain beliefs in this world, and that all life is sacred is one that I happen to believe we should adhere to.
Just because some one else doesn't happen to believe it, is no reason for us to give it up.

Apparently everybody's favourite president can now define what torture is and over rule the supreme court and ignore international law. :(

Good post :)

well, apparently, the information obtained through torturing is thought to be unreliable, as it could result in them telling whatever you want to hear to stop the torture...

logical i suppose.
