I used to have an old Lexmark and dam the ink cartridges were a complete rip off anywhere from 25 to 30 pounds (Insane)

I wouldn't mind a slightly more expensive printer if I made a big saving on ink. Any advice?

If you are buying an entry level printer for £30-£50 then just buy a new one each time, I know several people that do this. You get the cartridges free each time and the cost of buying new ones usually amounts to the same as a brand new one :)

If youre after decent compatibles then my DX3800 Printer/Scanner is great as i pay 99p per cart.

I'm wondering if the DX4000 uses the same ink cartridges as OcUK has that model in stock.

(Edit)

I also am wondering about the DX6000. It costs a bit more but I've bought printers in the past and when pictures were printed you could see lines though it where the ink cart had gone back on forth. If a little more expensive printer prevented this it might be worth investing a little more.

I purchased a good specification Canon printer late last year (Pixma iP5200R).

Inks
Wireless & Wired LAN
Automatic Double-Sided Printing
High Resolution

The printer takes 5 cartridges and I pay approx. £38 for a complete set of all 5 (however usually it's just 1 I usually change at any given time(Individual colours are around £8 each) and this is for Canon originals.

I personally wont use compatibles in my printer.

Go for an epson ever time I would say.
Most of them have 5 or 6 individual ink carts so you can just replace the one that has gone, plus you can pick up non original replacement carts for as low as 99p as has been said.

I have seen somewhere a continuous ink system for around £40. Works out miles cheaper than replacement carts

search the forum as I heard about it here

I got the DX6000 set it all up until I couldn't find a cable to connect it to my PC.

Do printers often come without the USB cable and if so what the hell is the point of that? lol :D

(Now I can print all the porn off I like. I mean get my CV printed out and so on.)

Usually the cartridges you get pre installed with the very cheap printers are a lot lower (probably half) capacity than the ones you purchase so it isn't actually cheaper to buy a new printer, also environmentally land filling a whole printer every time your ink runs out is appalling.

sorry. consider me a hi jacking moron, but could you answer me a question that has probably been answered already.

I could do with a printer.

I woulnt like to spend much being a printer and all.

I could do with some really really cheap refills. (The thread title caught my eye).

I probably wont be printing photos, buts it would be nice to have color.

Dont know ANYTHING on printers what so ever.

Cheers

im not sure on models but epson are the chepest i have used. lexmark and hp cartridges come with the printer heads on the cartridges, which bumps the price considerably. thats why the epson ink is normally cheap as chips.

Do the Epson heads still clog if you don't use the printer in a while?

Yes they do but you can use the print head clean facility in the software and you should be fine, some times you need to run it a couple of times but with ink as cheap as they are for the Epsons it doesn't matter :D

They did last time I used an Epson. having said that Cannon seem as bad, and head cleaning seems to use half the ink

if u want bang for buck printer the r220 is brilliant (thats the one pictured with the ink system) cheap inks will print onto dvd's cd's perfect photos its cheap as it doesnt have an lcd but otherwise brilliant all rounc cheap printer

I personally wouldn't recommend Epson printers, I have an R200 on my desk at the moment, been there for about a year with no ink as I cannot afford to replace all of the cartridges.

In theory it should be cheap to replace them one at a time but no mine all ran out or were very low at the same time.

I have tried 3 different brands of cheap refils but the printer will not recognise these.

I soon plan to bin the R200 & get a HP, Canon or Lexmark
