How does one become a pub landord?

I would love to have a pub but I would hate to run one.

Pubs are not what they use to be, Smoking ban etc. and pubs cant compete with 24 cans for £7 from supermarkets etc.

Nope.

All you need for a personal licence are

*An accredited licencing qualification (NCPLH)
*Aged 18+
*Have no relivent convictions.

As for having your own pub, all you need is a premises licience, some insurance, and a brewery to buy from.

If your really interested, I'd suggest going the managed house route (Mitchells and Butlers, Punch, Whitbread etc) first, and then think about going independant.

I'm a licencee by the way :)

Yep, as am I, just got my personal licence (scored 5/5 and 34/35 if anyone's interested :p) I work as an Assistant Manager for Mitchell and Butlers :)

Pez - are you working for a managed house, or do you own your own pub?

You also have a few ways to "own" a pub, these are prob not all possibilities.

1 - Out right (obviously)
2 - The Brewery owns it, you manage it. Which means they control what beer you serve. And technically you are just the manager.
3 - You get the mortgage from the Brewery, so long as you haven't paid off the mortgage, they can dictate what beer you sell. But eventually you will own it.

The first option would be the most expensive one, but also the most freedom.

Was down the pub (rather than tacky bar) for the first time since the ban came in on Friday - so rammed we had to find another one, and that was probably twice as busy as it used to be :)

One either takes one on on behalf of a leaseholder, one takes a lease on, or one buys a freehold.

You do not have to have a licence to be a landlord. For instance, I am a landlord and do not have a licence.

Indeed - my cousin is a landlady and she doesn't have a licence

I'm with Castle - yourself?

Gilly - As far as I'm aware (also having just covered it on my recent licencing course) that you need to have a personal licence to be a DPS.
