Stupid Advertised BB speeds

i've got sky's top end package, which is supposed to be upto 16mbps.

I connect at about 12-13mbps. Which i'm really happy with.

What i'm not happy with is i have never seen more than 220kB/sec on downloads, and that only once. Usually 105kB/sec maximum even in the early hours of the morning

Yup and you need your line looked at. have you check the amount of errors your line has??

On topic. 20mb here and I get 20mb.

I'm able to max my line out almost any time of the day. Between 10 and 12 speeds slow down to 500k/s but I have zero packet loss and 10ms pings :)

Reason being that I read an article as im sure everyone else has that stated that pretty much everyone is being ripped off as the service that is advertised is not what you recieve. "up to xwz" being the operative phrase.

They are not misleading anybody, they advertise 'up to' speeds for whatever service you apply for, they do not gaurantee anything.

Im on orange Free BB with mobile contract and am "recieving 8meg service"

The 'free' Orange Broadband is actually only the 2mbit product, the 8mbit service is an additional £5 per month.

The ironic thing about this post is the fact you're complaining about broadband speeds within the UK, yet you are one of the beneficial factors as to why that is. For as long as we expect 'something' for nothing, the network providers will give us poor quality service, due to lack of funding.

Want good service? You have to pay for it.

For some reason and I don't know why since I have joined newnet I sync at roughly 1 meg more than I did with any other ISP I have used.

One of my frineds this week has also joined Newnet and has also noticed that he is syncing at roughly 1 meg more than his old F2S connection..

http://www.gotomyhelp.com/bandwidthmeter/download-result.php?kbps=3978

That is the speedtest I have just done, synced at 4832

even when you have a good line and can sync at 8128kbps, your ip profile is set to 7150kbps. something to do with overheads :p and even then you'll never get 7150 in a speedtest. i just did one....

you won't get much more than that - i think 6900 is the most i've seen. :)

I am with Be. When I called them up, they said I would be able to get around 14mb. However, I sync at over 2100 on Fastpath and get sustained 2.1Mb/second downloads from servers that offer that much. :)

Ooops, how did you get the results as a .png?
I have seen someone on the thinkbroadband who was getting 7800kbps on speedtest.net and broadbandmax... no idea how the hell that happened.
I am on Office 45 with ADSL24.

must be some sort of glitch with the profile. you can't get more than 7150 - if it's set correctly of course.

nice upload there. i just can't justify another £10 a month for that. and i certainly don't need the extra allowance. :p

I get 760kb/s on UK Online's 8mb package.

I am 2.3km from the exchange though and BT only thought I would get 4mb max

I am considering downgrading to the £19.99 deal. I did initally like the idea of the off-peak starting early and having the extra upload, but I don't need the extra upload and I don't download anywhere near as much as I originally thought.

Do the caps include uploads? or is it just downloads?
I am billed on the 26th and so far I have used just 4.41GB in peak times since the 26th of last month... That's barely anything! 4 people use the net in my house, so I thought I would need the 45GB.

well i'm with bulldog on the 16MB package and sync at just over 21meg and get an average download of about 2.1MB/s - 2.3Mb/s

i generally use the ati website and download the radeon drivers just to see what the average is usually get the full driver package in about 20 seconds

just a shame that I won't be getting these speeds when I move house later in the year.
