Are you glad you switched to a laptop?

I have both but only really use the laptop for uni work when i'm in the library or when i'm out on placements and for a music programme (SmartMusic) that is a subscription and can only be used on one computer at a time. When it's on the laptop I can take it wherever I want.

I really do prefer my desktop though

I recently swapped to a laptop (Asus V1Jp) and it's fantastic. It's slightly more powerful than my old desktop system (4200 dual core, 256mb 7800GT, 2gb ram).

However, you do pay the price premium for smaller components etc but it's great for business. I am tempted to buy a full on desktop system again just to use for batch processing images oh and for the latest games but other than that, this laptop is great.

15" screen but does big resolutions in widescreen so is better than my old 19" Viewsonic VX910.

I'd only get a laptop when I want to travel with such technology.
I have a wireless keyboard/mouse near my bed and can use it from there to watch my HDTV and fall asleep ;P

But aye, i'd like one if i wanted to read stuff in bed rather than this back aching chair all night or using my glasses to read the TV.

Oh and the future proofing of laptops is almost none, you can't really change that much and if things get worse, you pay an arm and a leg for parts ;/

I bought a laptop at christmas and now wishing i hadnt as i hardly ever use it, i enjoyed building my pc, finding how watercooling works, building the watercooling, overclocking, upgrade's.

i just find laptops are not to my taste, i loved it when i was on CRT but now i have my 22" monitor PC is absolutely gorgeous.

So far the laptop has been great apart from one thing. The battery has died. Until the new one arrives, it will be a pain in the ass. After I get the new battery it will be great - browsing whlst on the bog

 I thought it was just me who did that  :p

I have a laptop and my main desktop. Use the desktop for.. everything, really. Laptop is only really any use for casual browsing.

Desktop has multiple high quality screens, a proper desk, decent keyboard and mouse, proper specification, is dead easy to upgrade, plays every game available.

I've got an Xbox 360 as well. I turn it on perhaps once every month. Console game just isn't as good.

I did consider a Small Form Factor pc as thats essentially a Laptop without the LCD screen so your not limited to the Laptop screen size , but your still stuck with all the leads.

I have not got a laptop yet, but I am switching soon. I would get rid of my rig as its too fast for what I use it for now I hardly play PC games due to having a 360. But its a shame laptops don't have to much HDD space I could not live with out my 900GB storage in this pc for downloads LOL.

But yeh laptops seem real sweet right now if you don't play games all you need is 2GB ram and your set IMO.

Plus having something I can take every where with me for my coursework this year and next year is so appealing instead of using my Pc.

I use my laptop for everything nowdays. I am a programmer / digital artist and everything I make is done on my 15" Macbook Pro. I used to hate using laptops, but set up on a desk with a mouse, it's no different from a desktop.

Sold the desktop a while ago and haven't looked back. If I do go back to a desktop in the next few years, I'd get a compact imac or something. Desktops are just too much like hard work.

I still use a desktop simply because of hard drive space and how its easy to add another hard drive, you can't do that with laptops :)

Good point. For me at least this isn't a problem as I leave all the big stuff on an external USB drive (80gb). I can see the need to use a tower if you are storing 1tb or more though...

I have both. I love the portability, using it around the house etc etc. Hard drive space became an issue, but a portable hard drive soon sorted that out :)

Silly question time :o

can you use a laptop off the mains if the battery packs in ?

In most cases, yes, you can.

Some people even go as far as suggesting that if you're going to be attached to the mains all the time, you should remove the battery, to prevent over-charging of the battery. However, with the newer batteries and charging circuits, this problem doesn't exist any more, so it's only people who don't believe this who still remove the battery! ;)

my m8 has just recently got one of them Rock laptops with 4gig of ram (free upgrade from 2gig) and 2x NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950 GTX 512MB again the 2nd card being a free upgrade for SLI, lucky git!, cost him a fair bit but boy does it fly along

Sold my gaming PC as I got fed up with Windows.

Got a shiny Mac laptop, and never looked back :D

I do miss gaming on the PC, but I now use a PS3 so it's all good.

This thread makes me want a MacBook.

Especially now that the L and I keys on my Fujistsu Siemens Lifebook have packed in... :(

However, I want a expensive racing bicylce more than a Mac!

Oh...back on topic, I do most of my Internet browsing on the laptop but for mvoie watching, downloading, gaming, video editing and photo editing I use the desktop. It's not the latest kit but it is a fair bit faster than the laptop.

I think you need both if you are into computing as a hobby or work with the damn things.

Yup best thing ive ever done actually was to switch my from my desktop to a laptop...been using laptops for almost 2 yrs now and cant say ive ever felt the need to go back to a desktop. Although currently my desktop is sat in pieces gathering dust...foolishly decided to go water cooling...spent over £400 a couple of yrs ago and still couldnt be bothered to put it together.

Really should get around to selling my watercooling stuff..got some nice bits but at the moment havent got the time plus im barred from the MM for bumping up a few FS threads...but that was nearly 2 yrs ago.

But at the mo im quite happy using my laptop, just boguth recently a new dell laptop which is quite powerful XPS1210....and it does everything i could possibly want it to..taking up minimal space as well. I dont play PC games, i got my xbox360 to do that..plus having to upgrade your pc every few months to play the latest games was getting silly really.

I honestly believe desktop pcs are possibly on their way out especially with the advent of the latest consoles and the more smaller powerful laptops out now. If anything ill probably buy a new laptop in the next couple of yrs...still have my old inspiron 8600 laptop which is still going strong...another thing that i need to get around selling at some point.
