As title really, moving into a house with mates and im in charge of sorting this out. Not really sure which way to go as i've only experienced virgin media. Which is better? I'd most likely go for the higher tier of connection (8mb or so)

Our initial test on your postcode indicates that you should be able to have BT Total Broadband with a likely maximum speed of up to 6.5 (Megabits per second).

Thats the only real indication of speed i've been given, nothing from sky other than the standard it states on the webby.

Thanks for the help

from what ive heard, if your planning on gaming both are pretty awful, sky being a bit better.

I have had loads of reccomendations for BE and ADSL24.

Neither.

Check with some of the comparison sites for better value, speed and perks (router etc).

The newer ISPs tend to have less restictions like bandwidth or throttling

I wouldn't go for either, especially not BT. I have just left BT after 6 years of service, the last 12 months was absolutely dire... They started using traffic managment and my connection was as slow as dialup at times, I couldn't even watch videos on youtube because they couldn't load, they kept pausing, etc.
Then gaming became bad and my pings started to increase. I contacted technical support and could barely understand them, their support is terrible, and their call centers are based in India, and furthermore they are not free...

If you can get Be, go for them: https://www.bethere.co.uk/

If you can't get Be, I would go for either an Entanet reseller, like ADSL24 or another ISP like Zen, IDNet or maybe Newnet.
It depends how much download allowance you need per month, what you are willing to pay, etc.

Entanet offers 24/7 UK support, I moved to them over 2 months ago and I am VERY happy - they are soooooooo much better than BT. My pings are now 10ms in games, no lag whatsoever, and speeds are MUCH quicker...

bugger...heh dunno what to do now, shall have to have a think about it. For those recommending Be, my mate just parted ways with them for zen as it was so bad, couldnt game in any form at all, 125 ping at almost all times.

I'm in the process of switching over to Sky, very impressed with the speed of service etc so far, will update when I'm fully switched over.

I'm also contemplating these ISP and have prices up Sky TV, Talk and Internet for £60.50. Does this include BT Line rental or will I have to add that on also?

Cheers

have you been with both

I personally know people with both, and have used both and I haven't liked either.

Mind you, I only have a 512k ADSL AOL connection, best I can get where I am though

No slating AOL now - considering I can only get 512K I'm on a fixed speed and it's only a tenner a month for me, so I get the best possible service at the cheapest rate I can possibly get, and - there's no awful traffic shaping!!!

But only the people with the service know what its like. I been with them a year and I tell you now I have never had a speed drop, disconnection from router or outage. The support has been 100% and to me they have been very helpful. I say my experience has been 10/10 for the year I have been with them. (August to August).
