Halo 3 Gone Gold

Been looking forward to it and not much longer to go, just hope it lives up to the first one since i couldn't stand the second Halo's campaign. :D

So who will be the first to post an image of their spartan cat on the 26th? :/

I never really got why Halo was so popular. I'll probably TRY and rent this.

Well here's what it is for *me*.

Story. Admittedly, you need to read the books to get the best of it, but I really liked the Halo story. None of it is totally original, but it all hangs together well. The in game cut scenes and dialogue are well done also.

It was pretty much the first console FPS that I found playable. The control scheme, whilst dumbed down from PC natch, felt good.

The weapon mix and vehicles. The decision to only allow you to carry 2 weapons at any one time was looked on as a risk at the time, but it worked well, forcing you to choose tactically what to carry.

The vehicle battles were great. The different styles of the Warthog, Ghost, Banshee and Scorpion made for some great tussles.

AI and character speech. The AI, especially on the higher levels, was pretty decent. And they recorded a massive amount of chatter, so you rarely got the same marine banter twice.

Music. It's somewhat derivative (what isn't in scores these days?) but it's atmospheric and works well.

That's it for me. It's by no means perfect (Library is laziness, though I don't hate it as much as some) but it all just fits together well.

i agree with everything you just said, id also add the multiplayer.

I was a pc fps multiplayer (CS, UT, Quake and the like) for many years but halo 2 remains the best online shooter for me, its so easy to pick up and play but very difficult to master. The maps are very well designed for multiple gametypes and the weapons are excellent (if a little unbalanced, but after the beta halo 3 seemes to be rectifying this) Also getting online with several of my mates and doing some team based gameplay remains the best online social experience i've had with gaming. Added to that Bungie are the best console developer in the world at providing LAN gaming options, Halo LAN nights are amazing fun, at uni we have a ring of tv's in the middle of our longe with a ring of sofas round the outside and atleast 20 people taking it in turns to do 16 player matches. Its so fun that even non gamers come and have a go, its a breeze to setup and the customization options are excellent (and halo 3 looks to be taking that up by a factor of atleast 10)

Thanks for taking the time to put accross all the things you like. Having played PC games for the best part of my life an FPS game on a console has to do a lot. It seems that everything Halo does has been done before. Maybe I am still missing something but I don't think it's my thing.

Same can be said for all of the classics. Goldeneye wasn't unique, neither was Orcarina of Time, or Mario 64 or Final Fantasy VII. They were just done very, very well.

I love halo, and having completed 1 and 2 I shall definitely getting this....just have to get another xbox, probably get an elite around xmas when the retailers put out some excellent bundles.

Totally agree it didn't really do anything new, but it did it all well, for the first real time on a console. (I can't compare Goldeneye, never had it).

Re the multi...

Erm. I confess it wasn't my thing. In fact I started playing for the first time the week before the H3 beta, to get a feel for it. And guess what? In a match with a good number of mates, I loved it! :)

However... out in the wild, the obvious years of experience of most of the other players out there made it not a fun experience. This is not a whinge! Just admitting that I'm SO outclassed it's not even slightly entertaining. And there is really nowhere for noobs to try and pick up any skills, as most of the 'training pit' games are swarming with experienced players apparently there simply to shred the noobs with no threat to themselves. (And I'm SOOOO grateful for the chat (or lack thereof) options in H3 to eliminate the perennial '12 year old yank' problem)...

Same in the beta. There was the odd game where it was obvious that others where pretty new to it as well, but for most of the time it was an exercise in frustration.

I can see all that changing with online co-op and Forge though :)

OoT and mario 64 were very original. Nothing like OoT had existed before its release and likewise for Mario 64 =/

I can't comment on FFVII because I'm not really into RPGs and I agree with GE.

I'll be looking forward to playing this but not because of the hype.

When the first Hallo3 trailer came out I was stunned, and like most went out and bought Hallo2, which turned out to be so poor (imo) that I played it about 3 times and never touched it. The SP campaign was boring, the enemies looked pretty much daft. I thought it was a very average FPS.

Looking forward to the 4 player co-op goodness though :)

A ton of Playstation 1 games were like those two before the N64 even came out. Those two just revolutionized the genres they were in, and being well-known 'mascots' for the format with previous histories certainly helped to build a solid foundation for success and popularity.
