New build advice - £700-750 inc OS

Just for the record, the Xigmatek Migard actually has better cooling than the CM690 II

Midgard (low fan speed) 42/51 degrees C CPU/GPU
CM 690 II (low fan speed) 44/53 degrees C CPU/GPU

Although the 690 II will accept water cooling a lot easier if you ever plan to go that route. And probably slightly edges the Midgard on build quality.

Possible to ask what this is based on? Idle with stock fans? Or kitted out fully? Just seems odd as the 690 has space for more fans along with larger front etc.

Both stock.

with fans @ High speed Midgard 41/49 - CM 690 II 41/49

So admittedly it's close. It'd be interesting to see how they would compare with a full set of fans. The Midgard is smaller, so wil require less fans for the same number of air changes per hour. However, if you include the initial price difference plus 3 more fans than the Midgard to fit the CM 690 II out fully, it's not really a fair fight in terms of budget. :p

Very true. All depends on what you want to spend and the looks ofcourse. Really dislike the midguards looks... cant really pinpoint why but the orangeness and dullness dont help. Although I think im one of the few who like the dark fleets and dislike the nzxt phantoms.... maybe my brain is upside down....

Stevie Wonder has joined OcUK :p

I lold at all the adverts for the Dark Fleet. They're all shots of the black case on a black background. At first I thought, yep, all moody, DARK fleet, very good.

Then you see it in the light... :o

I personally don't like the looks of either the Midgard or the CM 690 II; If it were my money, Fractal R2 please, and my hardware can sweat.

Ah a fan of the 'just a box' look xD

I like the haf x look etc.... bit too much going on but i like that style. Only on an antec 300 at the moment which is simple but nice for me.

tbh ive only seen the dark fleet on the advert photos so it might be a case of seeing it only as the makers want you to....

Well I've placed the order:

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.40GHz (Socket AM3) -
Antec Mini-P180 Micro ATX Case - Black (No PSU)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM
Asus M4A88TD-M EVO/USB3 AMD 880G (Socket AM3) DDR3 microATX Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 10666C8 1333MHz Dual-Channel
Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 600W Power Supply
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM
Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM
Arctic Cooling MX-3 Thermal Compound

As you can see I decided to go down the Microtx route in the end. The Cooler Master CM690 II was out of stock until October and I'm not a fan of massive towers so hopefully this should turn out a I want.

Should all be here on Tuesday so will post pics of my build :-)

thanks for all the advice

Update:

The order is out for delivery today and should be with me at around 14:30 :-)

Slight update on the above spec, the Antec Mini-P180 wasn't in stock afterall so I've gone for a CoolerMaster CM690 II Advanced case instead which to be honest, I prefer but didn't choose originally as they didn't have stock.

Pics of numerous boxes to follow :-) then let the build begin!

Already ordered this:

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.40GHz (Socket AM3) -
CoolerMaster CM 690 II advanced case
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM
Asus M4A88TD-M EVO/USB3 AMD 880G (Socket AM3) DDR3 microATX Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 10666C8 1333MHz Dual-Channel
Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 600W Power Supply
Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM
Samsung SH-S223C/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM
Arctic Cooling MX-3 Thermal Compound

Came to £770ish but happy to spend the extra to get the better case, improved GPU + I wanted the AMD processor.

DPD tried to deliver today but managed to screwup somehow. Apparently they tried to deliver but failed and left a note even though someone was home all day and no note left!!! not happy. They are attempting to re-deliver tomorrow and I'm working from home so hopefully they'll turn up this time so I can start the build :-)
