What current gen CPU's offer the best bang for buck.

Previously had a Q6600 which was OC'd and currently an i5 750 @4GHz. Bought these because they weren't overly expensive but were enough to keep up with current games when overclocked and coupled with a good graphics card. Idea was to spend as little as possible to get the best I could in terms of performance.

Id really appreciate some ideas on what to look at - Intel based please.

Thanks in advance.

currently you have

sandybridge 2500k,2600k,2700k cpu and they run on z68/77

ivybridge 3570k,3770k cpu and they run on z77 also on earlier z68

haswell 4670k,4770k cpu and they run on z87 and on the newer z97 boards

haswell refresh due june or September 4690k,4790k and they will only run on z97 but its not 100% confirmed yet

Just a small note to that last segment on haswell refresh is that they will run on z87 but Devils Canyen akA "haswell refresh K SKU" might only run on z97. JJ from asus talked about it on Linustechtips WanShow saying that it would be possible to run the new devils canyen on z87 if they could backport the MEI firmware from the new z97 to the z87 without causing performance loss of more than 5% to the already existing CPUs fitting that board.

Link to JJ explaining

Cheers all. Honestly you have saved me a lot of work (Shame on me!)

I've settled for a i5-4670k as they seem relativly well priced. Trying to figure out the best ram and motherboard combination for overclocking.

Bleeding heck these haswells are a little more involving arent they!

Dropped mem speed down to just over 2000mhz. CPU at 112.49 x40.0. 4.499GHz. 1.38v

Seems to get to 81deg

Cant achieve 4.6ghz without BSOD. But ive not been messing about long enough. Not a huge fan of the BIOS on the Sniper x97.

Thanks everyone for helping me out the other day.
