Driving a Ford focus 1.6 tdci which now and then when hitting about 1800 RPM ill have the smallest amount of power loss and then a puff of white smoke out the back,

Does this sound like an EGR valve and how much would it cost to replace?

Sounds more like an injector issue then EGR. I presume there are no engine lights? Could be worth trying a diesel additive, Forte do a fairly decent one.

yeah, no engine lights, I thought most fuels had the additives in already these days? Ill try one anyways, as its cheaper than a garage option and post back :)

ok the question is now...which product to use? Forte has about 5-6 different "cleaners" :)

Wyns do an EGR cleaner with is available from most local motor factors. Spray directly on to the EGR valve when you remove it. Works a treat. I used engine degreaser on mine which was very good.

I had a recurring engine light warning for the EGR valve on our X-Trail. I kept clearing it and it kept re-appearing every few days.

One night, it came on, so I gave the engine an Italian tune up. Nice straight bit of road, floored the throttle to open it right up.

Big cloud of black smoke out of the back. Next time I started the engine after that, the light had cleared. Hasn't come back since :D

Had this same problem when I had my diesel Astra, absolutely thrashed the car down an empty road, left a giant cloud of thick smoke.

seems to happen if you drive slow and conserve fuel doesn't kick the crap out the back so builds up in the system

it worked a treat for me :)

Just an update, after an italian tune up, it DID feel better....till the other night where I suddenly lost all power and it smoked to hell.

After pulling into a petrol garage I found a pipe that is after the turbo/MAF but before the engine block had a 3cm split in it.

Cue duct tape!

managed to plug the hole with epoxy resin and duct tape, but apparently the pressure in that little pipe is immense as it blew the stuff right off, popped into dealers today got the new part, covered myself in grease, but its now replaced!

happy days and extra "man" points for my beta self.
