Thinking of upgrading my I7 3770k pc

i just wanted any ideas if my pc setup is worth a cpu ram motherboard upgrade right now

CPU - I7 3770k at 4.5mhz
MB - Gigabyte Z77X-UP4TH
RAM - 16gb 1600mhz team group
GPU - KFA2 GTX 970 EX OC Black Infinity 8Pack in sli

i was thinking of maybe I7 7700k and a gigabyte Z270X-Ultra gaming with corsair vengeance lpx 16gb 3200mhz ram
or would it be better to save my money and get a GTX 1080 or a 1070 on my setup

Ryzen is out imminently; ask then.

Two things you can do right now are find out if you are GPU-limited by running GPU-Z and if you are CPU-limited by running Task Manager.

1080p and 120hz not planing anything higher right now

A 1080 would be too much GPU for 1080p gaming. A 1070 would be more than enough http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1731?vs=1743

CPU ram and mobo are fine, i wouldnt upgrade to a I7 700K unless you do any video editing or CPU intense stuff.

I still a I7 950 for gaming with a 390

as others have said get a 1070 and keep the rest.

I am only thinking of going for a 1080 so i don't have to upgrade again in the future a bit of future proofing the 1080 should last for years and i get the point with the 1070 i can save money and fantastic for 1080p gaming

If you can afford the 1080 then get it. That CPU bundle you have is plenty good still

well i have just bought a EVGA 1080 superclocked for now and maybe a 4k monitor down the road
