CPU started running hot

Today while playing overwatch, my fps dropped to 7-8 for about 15 seconds before going back to normal. Me being my paranoid self, I opened up CPUID and noticed my CPU was at 90c. I tried running prime95 while monitoring but I only did that for 2/3 minutes and stopped when it went up to 100c. The voltage is between 0.7 and 1.15, and when my PC is idle the CPU is only at 40c. I've tried monitoring the fan speeds but they don't register on the monitors [never have done]

My rig is about 2-3 years old:
i5 4670k
R9 290
16GB RAMM
After market heatsink
Not overclocked

I had this prebuilt at overclockers because I'm not too savvy when it comes to messing about with the parts.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Thermal paste sounds more likely than the heatsink being insulated by dust.

If you went with a prebuilt machine, you'll have to get someone more savvy to replace the thermal paste for you.

Clean it and put fresh paste on is the first cheap easy thing to rule out, assuming the fan is working correctly and fan and heatsink are relatively clean.
