What's the stupidest way you've lost money?

In the early 80's I had my chequebook stolen by my lodger... Who was also my mate who I trusted impeccably!
It was his girlfriend that rumbled him and dragged me to the Cop Shop to have him busted.

Basically he was going into Barclays bank with my chequebook and writing out "Pay Cash" cheques over the counter.
He was arrested and admitted it. Unbelievably he was in court by the end of the week and found guilty.

The problem was he had been writing cheques all over town and they hadn't come through the system yet. You can't get busted for the same thing so I was held responsible for all that. The Bank admitted to £300 being their fault (over the counter).

It cost me about £800 (in 1981 that was a shedload of money) and I had to go to the Provident and pretend I wanted to buy some white goods from Hotpoint shop (cash sale) just so I had funds to live. (Barclays froze my current account)

I will NEVER use or recommend Barclays to anyone.

Here's a pic of the **** (and me circa 1981 at Zulu-Xray CB do)

Cumulatively, credit card interest, starting from being a stupid 18 year old. Dread to think how much that cost me over the years. All paid now, and far more careful.

As a single incident, getting hammered and missing a flight was pretty pricey. Well, I say single incident, I think that has happened...3 times :p

Gypsie woman stuck a rose in my pocket in Malia years back. When she pulled the rose back out it had my 50 Euro note stuck to it.....Didn't realise until she'd gone

I've just started dabbling in cryptocurrency so ask me again in a few weeks

Just bought a mug off eBay that was £20 to replace one that my fiance was fond of. Broke it raging at Overwatch (She doesn't know yet)

I have a habit of 'in-play' betting against my own team if we are winning too.

Kickstarters...

I purchased a Sun Ultra 5 from Ebay well over a decade ago (or was it two?!) and as soon as it arrived I was so excited I plugged that bad boy in and *pop*. I had forgotten to switch the PSU from 110 > 220/230.

What a berko!

I posted a spec-check on OcUK (small form factor section) for a £750 Shuttle build in 2006 which came back fine. When put together though, the thing wouldn't go past POST checks. I RMA'd the system to OcUK's Shuttle partner Entagroup who said that the CPU was faulty. This turned out to be false as OcUK had the CPU afterwards, tested as working and returned it back to me. I never worked out what it was in the end, so I ended up having to write off the Shuttle barebones which was about £320! Then I went for an ATX case + mobo from OcUK for a standard desktop build and that worked fine with the other components. Not having a go at OcUK btw, as their support have always been good. Just that Entagroup wasn't as helpful and I'm still feel a bit stung about it now even though I've done a few OcUK builds now.

I paid £30 to have my european travel health card thing renewed by some online provider. I was in a big rush and didn't realise it was free if you did it online yourself. had to fill out their forms on their website anyway so they could fill out the actual forms. This still bugs me. Apparently they also fast track it, still took yonks to arrive anyway.

bought a music box thingy as surprise for the mrs called a Kaos box. Had to buy from America - duly arrived and found a US to UK plug adaptor ( but not a transformer ) worked for about 2 - 3 mins before smoke came out of it and it became a £300 paper weight

I used to be a nightmare for forgetting to pay parking tickets and then letting them end up a several hundred pound debt collecting fines. :o

I have wasted so much money on music gear eg
Korg Trinity cost £1700 - turned it on once
Zoom multitrack cost £600 - never turned it on
Focusrite studio interface cost £350 - never turned it on
DBX PA processor cost £450 - never turned it on
The list is endless

Bought £100 of Pacific media shares for 1p each and lost it all. Could have been worse though a good friend lost 1k on the same thing but bought his when they were 10p

Worked Mon-Sat, on Sundays drove a mate & some kid he was looking after to a (not quite) local car boot sale for a nosey. Did this most weeks.
One Sunday driving back, temp' gauge in car went up fast, steam from under bonnet, so had a nosey.
Hole in radiator, so did a quick fix.
Because was working all hours, had no time to fit a new one, so went & bought another car & was going to PX the old one, until mate said he'd buy it, so let him have it for a ridiculously cheap £250. He knew radiator was knackered as was there when it happened & said I'd help install it once he got hold of one, so drove to his place, picked him up in my newer car & we took the older one (now his, signed book & all) back to his.

Then he said he'd pay me £20 a week, cheeky bugrit, but I didn't need the money so agreed to it. Month & a half later, I keep having to chase him each week for £20 & he had cheek to ask to borrow money one week, he got told to expletive off.
Two to three months from sale, still money chasing him & his gf, when they turned & said the cars engine was knackered. I was confused, I look after cars. Took a quick look & they'd not replaced the radiator (muppets...).

They stated they were not going to pay for a knackered car. I said they bloody well were (nowhere near this politely). Alas, never saw another penny from them. He avoided coming near me for a long time, but when he finally did when I was out with someone one night, he said he was upset & he'd cried as he'd lost a mate (odd...). Said I wasn't interested & walked away.

I don't trust anyone with anything any more.:mad:
