I have a gigabyte 170 sli motherboard with 2x 8 gb 2400 ram.
I built using a 6600k with 240mm artic freezer aio. I have it overclocked to 4.5 ghz
My gpu is a kfa 1080.
I game at 1080 or 4 k 60hz depending on the game and have a oculus rift which i use if the game supports it.

I was wondering if i would see much of a gain just updating the cpu to a 7700k.
I only recently overclocked the 6600k from 4.1ghz to 4.5 ghz and was surprised at the speed difference it made to my system.
Would the 8700k and new motherboard be worth the extra 150 over the 7700k.

If "wanting" to upgrade personally would dump the extra on a board and go to the 8700 for the extra cores and threads . Otherwise stick to the current chip if the 7700k was being looked at . Slight advantage to hyper threading but nothing that would net great gains .

Interesting, I would have said that if the cost to upgrade isn't that massive then it would be worth it.

Isn't the 7700k almost twice as capable as the 6600k? 4 Cores is going to start limiting things pretty soon, if it isn't already. But I would have thought 8 threads would give you plenty of room to then wait for either Ryzen on 7nm or Whatever Intel launch to combat that.

If you have a good AIO setup and can get a 7700k close to 5ghz then I can't see why it wouldn't see you right for a good while yet.

Obviously the 8700k is going to be an improvement again, you would be looking at both faster IPC and 3 times the total processing power of your 6600k. Although if you are going to change board then you should also be seriously considering the X470 platform and either the 2600 or 2700 especially if you can get that ram moving a bit faster.

Now you have your chip moving faster is it actually throttling your GPU?

Just wait for the 8core coffeelake incoming...I'm on 6700k and going to 8700k ain't worth it imo.

If your going to upgrade then 8 core 16 thread coffeelake will last you yonks! It is a reply to Ryzen 2

I'm was also thinking of upgrading to a 8700K (still on a 6700K/Z170)..... guess i'll wait. Is there going to be a Z470 or the like!?
