Hi,
Its been so long since my first PC was built (help by a friend).
And I think its time for a new PC since mine is so outdated. (CPU: i7-930).

I have not caught up with the current market and as confusing as it is I've got less of a clue what to choose.
I will not be re-using anything from my old PC. A new full build would be nice (excluding Mouse/Keyboard or Monitor if must).

Budget: ~£700-1000
Preferably: Intel, Nvidia.
Purpose: 1080p Gaming (should suffice right?), Photo editing (Lightroom).

CPU: i5-i7?
Motherboard:
GPU: GTX 1060?
RAM: 16GB minimum I guess?
PSU:
SSD: 500GB
Cooler/Heatsink:
Case: (good cable management)

Are the 8th gens CPUs the way to go? seeing couple of people's builds (on this forum) with older gen CPUs.

hope someone could spec me a build so i have something to work on.
Thanks!

Buy a £20 X5650, OC it to 4.2/4.4Ghz and enjoy six core 12 thread gaming.

There is no modern game I've tried that even comes close to maxing the CPU out, they're all GPU bound.

With the £980 I've just saved you, buy the GTX 2080 in a week or so. :D

Check the X5650 thread in the CPU forum for more info.

I moved from 4ghz i7 860 to an i5 7600k 5.2ghz last year and found a massive improvement tin gaming, specially 1080p .
There is a jump from 1st Gen Intel to 2/3rd Gen IPC/IMC - after that it's just been speed and now with 8th/9th gen adding cores oto the mix .

ryzen 2700x 8 core 16 thread

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £765.50 (includes shipping: £12.60)

intel i7 8700 6 core 12 thread, all core boost 4.3ghz

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £785.48 (includes shipping: £12.60)

9th gen intel will be out October roughly , moves to 8 core. 8700k 6c/12t will be replaced by 9700k 8c along with z390 taking over z370. B460 will remain as they are coffeelake chipsets unlike z370 and the 8700 non K will not be replaced

monday should see nvidia next gen cards which should have a slight knock on prices for new and should dent 2nd hand market! might be able to pick up gtx 1070 second hand for £200 maybe ... so if you can reuse your current GPU then do so .

have a look at what your core set up will sell at. someone took my i7 860/formula board and 16gb off me for £200...

That's not a bad idea actually. my gpu is a HD Radeon 5850 (no clue if its good or crap). would that make a difference?
The reason I said I wanted a new full build is because my mate is also in the market for a gaming rig, and that we would probably be getting the same stuff. He's been a laptop guy his whole life and finally has the money to get something superior.

Thats quite a build. Thanks for the recommendation.
I've read that Intel still tops the ryzens by a bit in performance, also with the RAM prices these days..... probably go with Intel build.
Is the Intel build overclockable? probably wont be overclocking but its a nice feature to have for future.
My mate ain't gonna wait for the 9th gens since he's been waiting long enough.

so now that the new GPU's have come out.....£500+?!?! probably not what I expected to blow most the money on tbh.
Also it doesn't seem to have any affect on the pricing of older cards either (1080/1070/1060). so what now?

same price , 12gb more

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...hiba-3d-nand-solid-state-drive-hd-002-gi.html

spoke to a few reps of different vendors who are currently in German , pricing did come in a little higher then they thought , also UK suffering from POOR STERLING- card are bought in dollars which doesn't help much . its not until 2070 get released that prices should be forced down - but if demand is high... then resellers will list cards at a higher price due to no stock etc

if your doing 1080p gaming then gtx 1060 or rx580 new with warranty etc . RX Cards currently coming with 3 free games from AMD.

was funny, saw a few panic sellers listing 1080ti for £400-50 , should be £500 until 2070 releases.
