Hi all, my friend is building a new system from OC and would like some advice so any help appreciated.

Only must is 16 gig of ram and this system is for gaming, other than that open-minded about the other stuff!

Squeezed in GtX 1080ti and 1440p 165hz G-sync screen !

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,904.97 (includes shipping: £23.10)

@Lemin above is also excellent, recommend pushing 32" 1440p 75hz IPS monitor and keeps the same proce or going for MSI 1440p version which will bring total to £1800.
1440p will push GPU hard and lessens the CPU, at 1440p Ryzen isn't to far behind Intel and is best bang for buck, at 1080p it's behind Intel , specially with beefier GPUs

Hi guys, ok spoke to himn this morning he wants nvidia and there is no need to include a monitor as he is keeping the one he has and may upgrade in a month or two

gtx 1080ti as above and get a damn good monitor later
given gtx 1070ti is wanting to save some cash :)

Wouldn't recommend a Ryzen CPU if the main purpose of the build was for gaming. Even with the inflated prices the 8600k is what you want.

doesn;t loose out to much at 1440p and above, and with games like BF1/V , very little difference as the game eats threads, specially networking Online

also, 9600k... in theory, it will have MSRP price at launch and soldered, once first batch is sold or pre-orders met, then price hikes will happen

Might go for this; what you think

ASUS ROG STRIX B360-F GAMING

Intel Core i7 8086K, Coffee Lake, 6-Core with Hyperthreading, 4.0GHz, 5.0GHz Turbo

Noctua NH-U12S - Quiet Performance Air Cooler

32GB (2x16GB) Corsair Vengeance LPX - 2666MHz

Corsair TX550M, Semi Modular, 80PLUS Gold - Single GPU

250GB Samsung 860 EVO, Read 550MB/s, Write 520MB/s, 98K IOPS

1TB Seagate ST1000DM010 BarraCuda, 7200rpm, 64MB Cache

Microsoft Windows 10 Home Advanced 64-bit

Keep my 1060 gpu for now with intention of getting 1080ti shortly

b360 board cant overclock that CPU- you can rig it to run 4GHZ all cores with MCE but you'd NEED GOOD COOLING!!!!!! esibaer 360!!!!

do you also need 32gb for gaming ? rather shift funds to bumping up to a Z370 board .

or down shifting to i7 8700 non K and B360 board and it'll boost to 4.3ghz all cores , and put out less heat

Which board would be better suited for this build? Would consider doing memory at a later date but not worried paying extra if it does the job

Wasn't this spec suggestion for your friend, not you? ;)

Yes mate - I just copied what he sent me on discord this morning, hence the weird formatting that came out, how dare you assume I would be caught near a 1060 ;) lol

Any mid range Z370 ATX board would be fine. The ASRock Extreme 4 or similar.

Makes no sense to go with 32GB Ram though for a gaming system. You won't see anywhere near that amount of ram usage.

He has decided on the below, what do you guys think? I feel like the SSD is a bit pricey tbh but hey ho

Intel Core I7-8086K 4.00GHz (Coffee Lake) Socket LGA1151 40th Anniversary

Asus ROG Maximus X Hero Intel Z370 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard

Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (CMK16GX4M2B30

Seasonic Focus Plus 850W 80 Plus Gold Modular Power Supply

Seagate 1TB BarraCuda 7200rpm 64MB Cache Internal Hard Drive (ST1000DM010 Previously ST1000DM003)

Corsair Hydro Series H100i PRO RGB Performance Liquid Cooler - 240mm

NZXT Source 340 Midi-Tower Case - White Window

Samsung 960 PRO Polaris 512GB M.2 2280 PCI-e 3.0 x4 NVMe Solid State Drive

In my opinion it doesn't make sense to drop an extra £30 on a factory overclocked i7. The i7 8700K is currently overpriced as it is so an extra £30 for a slightly better binned cpu is taking it into silly money. If your friend is getting a high end board such as the Asus Hero then he can easily overclock the cpu himself.

For a single gpu a 650W psu is enough. Unless he plans to SLI then no need for 850W.

I would go with one of the Alphacool Eisbaer LT coolers over the Corsair.

Case choice is personal preference but the S340 is a bit limited in Radiator support. Also the airflow probably isn't the greatest due to the solid front panel. I would look at a case that can take a 360mm AIO and then your friend could go for the Alphacool Eisbaer LT 360mm which is great value at £99.95.

Samsung 970 Pro is cheaper and newer, but to be honest the 960 EVO would be enough if he wants NVMe. Not going to notice any difference for gaming.

Thanks for all this advice Lee, he is going with a lot of it, only thing is he actually wants a small case(for some reason), any other suggestions on the case point?

I would go with something like the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M Glass. It is a bit bigger than the S340 but still a MID sized tower. It has great radiator support and a mesh front so airflow isn't restricted. There is also direct airflow to the gpu as the internal drive cages have been moved to the right side of the case.

You can then fit something like this in the roof (If going with the i7).
