Looking for a new 27", 1440p, 144Hz, Freesync, IPS

Hello,

I want to pick up a new monitor before I later either upgrade or buy a completely new setup.

Threads like this worry me and now I have no idea what to buy or which is a good brand to go for.

Initially I was thinking 27", 1440p, 144Hz, Freesync, IPS

But which to pick? Am I restricting myself going Freesync?

As I own an IPS panel at the moment I doubt I'd like a TN, unsure about a VA?

As per that linked thread, I wouldn't even know how to check for dust under the screen or what constitutes as excessive light bleed, maybe this is a good thing!?

As I read up more on this I'm tempted to get the ASUS MG279Q. Maybe see if Black Friday / Cyber Monday does anything to the price. Seems like any monitor can cause issues so just buy from somewhere with a good returns policy just in case.
 
That's the thing with reading some of the threads on here it can really put you off buying a monitor, the best thing is like you say buy one from somewhere that has a good returns policy just in case of an issue.

Are you running the GPU in you signature 7950 ? if so i don't believe this model supports Freesync anyway so i would be of no benefit unless you plan on upgrading in the future.

I would stick with IPS you might be disappointed with TN colours and viewing angles but then they are super quick for gaming.

Cheers - I'm looking at swapping out the 7950 for either a 580 / Vega 56 or 64 - unsure which at the moment and if the rest of the rig wouldn't act as a bottleneck. I suppose if I'm going to get a decent 1440 monitor I'd like a decent GPU, not which if the 580 is enough, or do I push for the 56/64.
 
It was my thread that worried you, and rightly so ha! It is a minefield out there.

Checking for dust is easy... you just see it. Same with bleed and stuck/dead pixels. Plenty of images online if you want to check what to look for.

If you're staying with AMD, definitely go with a Freesync monitor. You can probably do better than the MG279Q which is getting on a bit now. Freesync 2 would be preferable also. Waiting until Black Friday might not be a bad shout either... bound to be some good deals on, but as stated, make sure to buy from a retailer with a friendly returns policy.

Hm, my impression of Freesync 2 was that it wasn't an upgrade, as per:

What it does provide, though, are additional features on top of the original FreeSync feature set. Every FreeSync 2 monitor is validated to have these additional features, so the idea is that a customer shopping for a gaming monitor can buy one with a FreeSync 2 badge knowing it’s of a higher quality than standard FreeSync monitors.

Both FreeSync and FreeSync 2 will coexist in the market. While the naming scheme doesn’t suggest it, FreeSync 2 is effectively AMD’s brand for premium monitors validated to a higher standard, while FreeSync is the mainstream option.

You’re not getting old technology by purchasing a monitor with original FreeSync tech, in fact the way adaptive sync works in FreeSync and FreeSync 2 is identical. Instead, FreeSync monitors simply miss out on the more premium features offered through FreeSync 2.

What are these new features? Well, it breaks down into three main areas: high dynamic range, low framerate compensation, and low latency.

Tbh apart from what sounded like the inferior Acer XF270HU I couldn't see any other screens at all. The rest are either 75Hz, TN panels, curved or 30"+.

I could only find 2 options for 27", 1440p, 144Hz, Freesync, IPS, although if you find more please let me know :D

Push for a Vega 56 if you want a more solid 1440p experience as with a 580 you would most likely need to drop down some quality setting to maintain a decent overall frame rate but then you also have freesync to fall back on if frames do drop to low.

The Freesync range the ASUS MG279Q is between 35Hz~90Hz over DP according to the specs but some newer models support Freesync 2 now so it may be wise to look for a newer models or different brand.

Cheers I'm thinking Vega 56 would be a better decision too. I'd rather it last me for another 6 years versus cheaping out upfront.

I think my google-fu skills are lacking, I'm really struggling to find any other viable alternatives that are 27", 1440p, 144Hz, Freesync, IPS - open to suggestions. Cheers!

No your not wrong i was just having a browse also and cant really find anything else IPS based on those specs you require except the Acer XF270HU.

I actually just spotted the new LG32GK850F on another site which i actually like the look off personally and although its not IPS its a VA type panel it does sound rather nice.

Does anyone have a view as to whether Asus may refresh the MG279Q and release a newer model any time soon, say based on past models / releases dates / life spans?
 
I think after much reading I'm going to hold off buying the Asus. It's over 3 years old and seems to have a fair amount QC issues. I'm reading interesting things here regarding LG Nano IPS. I'm likng the sound of the 27", 1ms, 1440p, 144Hz, Freesync 2.0. Possibly £500-600.

Aw man that's ages away. Do you have a schedule of upcoming QHD Freesync 2 monitors going to be released? I really don't want to buy old tech from Asus from 2015 and from what I'm reading the nano-IPS stuff sounds v.cool.

well the 2015 tech from Asus wont be Freesync 2! and yes, the Nano-IPS stuff is cool, but its coming out in dribs and drabs, higher end stuff first and then it filters down so the 34" G-sync and Freesync are first, as well as the 34" 5k2k - then the lower end 34", and so on and so on
