Tax when buying/selling

will be buying a car from family member, it’s currently taxed until Jan 2020.
Does the tax only cancel once we send notification to Ebla it’s been bought/sold/V5 details change?

Pretty sure that 'legally' you need to tax it before you drive off. Although there is tax paid on the vehicle, that will be for the previous owner, not you.

My Escort was still showing as taxed from the previous owner for a good few weeks before it showed up as unlicensed.
