Hi All,

I have had my mobo and i7 4790k (@4.8) since 2014 :-O

It's served me well, I upgraded the GPU to a 1080TI (second hand) about a year ago as I upgraded my monitor to a 3840 x 1440 (120hz) panel.

I'm running DDR3 16GB and in the most part the PC runs fine.

However at the res I run, even my GPU is struggling a little and I play a lot of Total War which is a very heavy CPU game.

I know the new AMD chips have just landed, and am looking to upgrade probably the GPU / mobo / ram and I might get another larger SSD as well.

I'm not budget bound, but I also can't justify just spending silly money on parts that will yield little to no difference.

PC is used mainly for gaming and want something that gives me a smooth gaming experience on my monitor.

Thoughts on the upgrade path?

Kind Regards
Lea x

Hi

An R7 3700X would give you 8 cores/16 threads, so double that of the 4790K. A £99 board like the MSI B450 Tomahawk would do fine for it. And bios flashback means you can update the bios without a cpu installed.

Only real upgrade on the gpu would be a 2080 ti.

I concur that there's little sense to change GPU, unless you really want to smoke some money.
High end GPU advance has been completely lack luster for years.
Maybe in next year we'll start getting to somewhere with AMD's planned high end models and also Intel joining discrete GPU game.

Again putting some more money into CPU could certainly give plenty of reserve for long time.

Also if you're running games from HDD more SSD space woulld improve loading times.

Thank you for the replies it's very much appreciated. I thought as much with the GPU so happy to leave that for the time being.

With regards to budget what I really mean is I prefer to spend the best bang for buck, I suppose as pointed out it's more about future proofing the mobo / ram / cpu which I have had since 2014.

I don't have infinite sums of money, but want to ensure I'm good for another 3-5 years with the mobo / ram / cpu.

I do think that in some games it's showing it's age, the question is with the new AMD line up it still does not perform as well as intel if I understand correctly?

Whilst the extra cores are handy are they necessary over the current intel line up?

I will be buying a second SSD as well (2gb).

Thanks for your help thus far x

Thanks I have tried messing around with the cores for this game to no avail, my chip is aging and with it being a CPU type game can't help but think upgrading that aspect will yield an improvement and help future proof the system x

Thoughts on this guys? x

Also I am currently using a waterblock with my 4760k, do I need a new cpu block for the Ryzen? If so can somone link me the one that will fit?

Do people think this route is better than the intel one?

The 3700X seems to be better value for money. Not a huge difference between them in clock speeds. Nothing that an overclock won't solve :)

Same goes for the Ram. This 8Pack kit is only 3200MHz but it is Samsung B Die so it should clock nicely. I am sure you can get assistance in the 'Ask 8Pack' section on that.

Those two saving could be used to get a bit of an upgrade on the board. The Aorus Pro has a 12 phase VRM vs 10 phase on the Gaming X and it is less 'Barren'. Looks like it has slightly better audio and also USB Type C on the rear I/O etc.

I don't really know much about custom water cooling but I would imagine that you can get an AM4 bracket from the Manufacturer. I know EK do them.

The Ryzen route is definitely the way to go especially as you are gaming at a higher resolution. You can still drop a 12c/16c into this board in the future if need be.

Waste of money buying 8Pack RAM, been messing about this afternoon with a B450/R5 3600 and Crucial RAM (Micron E-Die) and it was hitting 3600MHz C16 with ease, and cost ~£60-70 for 16GB. It even went to 3733+ but the IF became unstable so dropped it back, will do further testing tomorrow when I am back in my test lab.

They really are amazing value/giving (assuming CBS 3200MHz kit?) - what timings did you manage to squeeze out of them at 3600MHz?

EDIT: Put on my glasses C16 - across the board - 16 16 16 ?

Not had time to faff really, too much work happening presently, but they are 3000MHz version, 32GB (2x 16GB dual rank) not a kit just single sticks. 16-19-16-35 1T 540 ish, I'll do some further tinkering tomorrow hopefully. Very impressed with the R5 3600 though, the IMC seems really nice.

Thanks for the feed back - impressive, and 2 x 16GB dual rank and not a dual set - Jesus - no frills all performance. Incredible value : performance. Must have been very satisfying...

@tammzy - must tweak your interest re X570 ITX with the above - a decent price offset and tinkering fun to be had (who will break first).

So what ram is also a consideration?
Depends how much you like tinkering (know how)?

The CBS sticks (Crucial Ballistic Sport LT) are great value - if unfamiliar i would probably recommend you get the 3200MHz kit as you could plug and play and gives you time to play at your leisure. But be sure to get sticks with AES within the product code.

EDIT: or read above (@tamzzy :p - watching South Park - Scott Tenorman Must Die - must watch episode if not seen)
